A Catonsville letter carrier who worked for the postal service for more than two decades stole more than 20,000 pieces of mail, according to federal authorities.
Jeffrey L. Shipley is accused of pilfering checks and money orders. He is accused of filching passports and prescription medication. He is accused of pilfering credit cards and Mother's Day cards. He is even accused of stealing furniture from the United States Postal Service.
Shipley was charged in federal court last week with one count each of mail theft and delaying the mail.
Neither Shipley nor his attorney could immediately be reached for comment he previously declined to talk to a reporter.
Shipley was hired in August 1993 and most recently worked Tuesday to Saturday out of a postal facility in Catonsville, according to court documents. He delivered mail to homes on Winters Lane, Old Frederick Road, Lincoln Park, Roberts Avenue, Shipley Avenue and Johnson Street.
The charges do not say when authorities believe Shipley began the thefts, but they started investigating him in February according to other court documents.
Investigators from the USPS Inspector General's officer initiated their case after receiving a tip over an Internet hotline that Shipley was stealing bagfuls of mail as well as taking jewelry, Netflix movies and passports from the mail, according to court documents.
As the investigators set to work, they met with people who provided photographs of Shipley's mail-stuffed apartment and interviewed people on his route who had previously complained about letters not arriving, according to the documents.

They didn’t notice a pattern of theft on his routes until now?
I got to work with a retired state police detective. He explained that, in many cases, a single instance of official misconduct can be explained as a mistake. A continuing pattern? Plea bargain a deal and plead guilty.
i know that this common...
ONE count?
I had a friend who was fired for a dust-up that started when the boss said he mailed her a check and she said it never arrived. They got into it and she got canned. Guess where he lived? Catonsville. Must have dropped it in his local postbox on the way home.
O.K. I’m glad they got him. But when will we start getting the dirty beureaucrats & politicians?? They do more harm in a day than this guy did in twenty years. It really is time to drain the swamp.
I think it is each....20,000 counts total.
Affirmative action hire?
Newman just stored it in half of Kramers half-space he rented from Jerry
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
And it only took Jerry half a day to do what normal ‘carriers’ took days to do....Also think Kramer said HE was under investigation because he(JS) not only got it done on Sunday but J had a 95% good delivery ratio when the norm was 35% - Which alerted the Post Office Department to the fact that a ‘phony’ mail carrier was on the route.
Which put an end to Newman’s dream of being transferred to Hawaii, where the air is so dewy sweet you don’t even have to lick the stamps.
hoarding Victoria Secret catalogs no doubt...
The USPS version of Hoarders!
You need to get this back to your friend pronto. Maybe she can get her job back. Serious.
I cannot believe you all missed the obvious Seinfeld episode regarding mail fraud, more relevant to this than other references!
Catonsville?
Oh noes!
The hippies are starting to ruin that great place.
