Polar bear population counts are estimates only, derived from the most rudimentary of scientific knowledge and made up largely to meet the expectations of the public, researchers said in an email to a science blogger.
Dag Vongraven, chairman of the International Union for Conservation of Natures Polar Bear Specialist Group, sent an email to Polar Bear Science blogger Susan Crockford to clarify that a report thats about to go public to give updates on the animals worldwide population level contains estimates, not hard facts.
As part of past status reports, the PBSG has traditionally estimated a range for the total number of polar bears in the circumpolar Arctic. Since 2005, this range has been 20-25,000, the email citing the reports footnote stated, Newsmax said. It is important to realize that this range never has been an estimate of total abundance in a scientific sense, but simply a qualified guess given to satisfy public demand. It is also important to note that even though we have scientifically valid estimates for a majority of the subpopulations, some are dated.

Want to stop Aagency ScientistPersons fron squeaking like neutered castrati as they sing in thheir agency choir?
Have your Congress Critters halt Federal Funding for all sciences relating to flora or fauna listed or potentially liissted as endangered, or threatened.
Problem goes away when the funding goes away.
Scientists were once scrupulously honest, because those paying for their research would not tolerate “cooking the data until it confessed”.
Bureaucrats demand such data cooking.
Agenda Uber Alles! - it’s the bureaucratic way.
The liars are anti-science idiots. They should be beaten with their worthless “research” papers and exiled.
MMMMM... fudged polar bears....
Just count the damn bears! How hard could that be?
Of course, getting them to fill out the census forms might be a problem.....................
“Well, we don’t know how REEAALLLLLY know many polar bears there are, since every researcher we send there to count them disappears, and all we find is a pile of entrails and a blood-stained snow......it has us all mystified...but they must be dying off!!”
When was this magical time of rainbows and unicorns? While some scientists are scrupulously honest, others have always been ready to whore themselves out. Even Galileo wanted to name his newly discovered moons of Jupiter after members of his sponsors, the Medicis.
Much of the practice of science with publishing raw data and providing instructions on how to duplicate experiments came about to keep scientists from cutting corners, ignoring data which doesn't fit or just lying outright.
“. . .others have always been ready to whore themselves out. Even Galileo wanted to name his newly discovered moons of Jupiter after members of his sponsors, the Medicis.”
Actually, the discovering scientist does get to name what he/she has discovered, and names have commemorated everything from political figures to wives, lovers, financial supporters.
Namin’ ain’t whorin’.
;-)
The numbers were not faked due to public demand, they were faked to mislead the public with a manufactured crisis to justify the creation if a demand for programs that give the government a massive power grab
