MADRID King Juan Carlos of Spain is abdicating in favor of Crown Prince Felipe, his 46-year-old son, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy announced on Monday.
The kings abdication, after almost four decades on the throne, follows health problems but also comes amid a decline in his popularity, particularly as a result of a corruption scandal centering on his son-in-law that has also put the spotlight on the royal familys lifestyle and finances at a time of economic crisis and record joblessness.
The king, 76, announced his abdication in a letter to Mr. Rajoy, who then made the decision public in a short televised address, during which he called King Juan Carlos a tireless defender of our interests. Mr. Rajoy added that the abdication process would take place in a context of institutional stability and as proof of the maturity of our democracy.
King Juan Carlos was expected to make a separate address later Monday to detail the reasons for his abdication.

FYI..Prince Charles was seen printing out 1000 copies of the article, and leaving them all over Buckingham Palace..
I’m waiting for King Barack to abdicate [/heavy sarc]
This just in....General Franco is still dead.
Juan Carlos did a good job leading his country to democracy after 40 years of Franco’s dictatorship. Whatever his personal failings, he will always be remembered for that.

Franco led them to democracy by setting up the return of the monarchy before he died. I’m surprised Spain kept the new flag with the symbols of the monarchy as it veered sharply to the left after Franco; the monarchy was what the left had initially opposed in 1931 (when Juan Carlos II’s grandfather abdicated).
Generalissimo Franco is still dead.
And so are all the commies and anarchist he put into the ground.
...and Charles wept...
The Spanish flag’s coat of arms displays the origins of the American dollar sign. Look closely.
Anyway, King Juan Carlos is doing the right thing. Maybe he sees his son as a more reliable successor than Queen Elizabeth does hers. She’s determined to outlive her wacky twit-of-the-year son, IMO.
I have read that the dollar sign originated with a letter “U” printed over a letter “S” for the US. I can’t prove that but it seems both logical and quite a coincidence if its not true.
One thing I remember about him is that when Spain got national voting ID cards, people didn’t want them; so, he went to the local office that dispensed them, and had one made for himself, which he carried.
Oh, she might abdicate, in favor of William.
I dont see it.
Yeah, they need someone younger than can spend the peoples money faster. Jet setting and luxury takes lots of money.
I don’t think that is possible. Succession to the British throne is governed both by common law and statute.
I had a friend in the 80’s who believed Juan Carlos would become the Man of Sin mentioned in apocalyptic scripture.
Kissinger has always been on the watch list too.

as for King. Juan Carlos, I will always remember him for telling Chavez to shut up. That was quite popular just a few years ago.
