It almost sounds like the solider defected, converted to Islam, then volunteered to return to the US as a double agent.

When you’re a Soldier, you belong to the US Army. You don’t get to go on nature hikes in the combat zone or go out looking for friends. The other Soldiers depend on you. It’s like the old Roman battle formations. Your buddy’s shield was supposed to be in front of you. If he was off screwing around, you were wide open to attack.
There is no acceptable reason for this idiot to leave his unit in a combat zone. He exposed all the other Soldiers. He deserted in a combat zone. Look up the punishment for that in The Uniform Code. I have nothing but contempt for this jackass.
