Police: Driver mows down victims after argument in Baltimore

BALTIMORE —Authorities have made an arrest in connection with a hit-and-run in west Baltimore on Tuesday that killed a woman and a toddler and injured a 7-year-old girl.

Baltimore police said late Wednesday night that they arrested 28-year-old Lucresha Mints in connection with the case.

Detectives said the intentional hit-and-run happened at Franklin and Monroe streets just after 9 p.m. Tuesday following an argument between Mints and 25-year-old Latoya Skipwith.

Police said the fight got so heated that Mints got into her car, aimed it at Skipwith and floored it, driving down the sidewalk and striking Skipwith, 2-year-old Joshua Carter and an unidentified 7-year-old girl as they sat on the steps of a church.

Witnesses told 11 News the victims ended up in a nearby stairwell, where on Wednesday, the boy's father sat in shock. He was nearby when the incident happened.

"I got the word and ran around the corner, and once I came, I seen my son a mess. It just hurt me so bad, I just broke down," father Joshua Carter Sr. said. "I just snapped."

Skipwith was killed, and police confirmed Wednesday that Joshua also died as a result of his injuries. Relatives of the victims told 11 News that Skipwith and Joshua were cousins.

The 7-year-old girl was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said she is expected to survive.

Police told 11 News that family members said the hit-and-run was sparked by an argument and that Mints knew her victims. Police said they were able to recover the vehicle used in the hit-and-run, which was a gray Acura.

"She took two lives from one family -- two babies. That's my youngest sister and my little cousin. He was only 2 years old," said Skipwith's sister, Rhonda Bryant, through tears.

"My little grandbaby -- he was the love of my life," said Helen Virginia Whitfield, Joshua's grandmother, who was still trying to comprehend Wednesday how someone could do something like that.

Police have not yet provided details on what the argument between Skipwith and Mints was about.

Earlier in the day Wednesday, relatives were upset with police because of what they called a lack of communication from detectives about whether the suspect was in custody or not.

"Somebody’s got to give us some answers. They owe it to us," said Joshua’s great-grandmother, Elissha Jefferson.

Police said at the time that they were doing everything they could.

"In this case, we definitely empathize with the families. We're speaking about an instance in which a 2-year-old child and an adult victim were killed last night, where a vehicle was used as an intentional weapon to cause this homicide. We're reaching out to the public and we’re doing our due diligence on our part. We're really asking for the public's help," Baltimore City Police Department Sgt. Jarron Jackson said.

Homicide detectives are still investigating.

Charges against Mints haven't been announced yet, but she's no stranger to police. Court records show earlier this month, she was arrested on first- and second-degree assault charges.

Wow, Doc?

That is quite interesting. I must admit I did not always agree with him, but never before read anything racist from him.

I think people need to start stepping back and think twice before they hit enter.

Times are such that there are those who are doing things to force some into coming off racist. Not individuals here on FR, but individuals of the MSM, politics, and even in sports.

What we need to do is realize what the left is trying to do.

Make us so angry we will say or do things we normally would not do or even agree with if we were not pushed to the wall by their evil tactics or language.

Sometimes, it is best to step back and become a lurker instead of always joining the discussion, especially if the discussion angers you beyond control.

They couldn’t have been too hungry after yesterday. ;-)

But they do like feasting, and who am I to argue?

You bring up an interesting point, JimRed. I can’t think that my opinions have changed exactly, over my course of time at FR, in my posting exchanges and history, but I have certainly learned my manners, as many have had to do as newbies.

I still get removed with some regularity on Catholic threads, (for much less than today’s example, of course), but even that was because I jumped on-thread, before noticing it was a *non-caucus* Catholic thread, and where things can get bitterly antagonistic.

I know Jim would blow the posting archives up before letting Big Brother get at all of us nefariously. Thankfully. Love ya, Boss. Rita

Yes. I haven’t done a Double ZOT of the Day for quite some time now.

You’re right. One can never have too many guns or too much ammo.

“””A lot of outsiders will call us racist no matter what, because we tend to speak the truth””””

They way people are now, any word can be racist, anything can be racist.
If racism is not clearly there, then society nowadays will simply pull it out of thin air.
Everything is racist. Everything is politically incorrect.
So no matter what we do, we are going to be called racists whether we deserve it or not.

The TRUTH about races and why there is a good reason behind stereotypes SHALL NEVER BE SPOKEN, even if it the plain truth. It is ignored.

Allmighty Political Correctness™ trumps truth every time.

And I can agree with THAT! I have seen it in action, up close and personal. It is not pleasant to see OR to deal with.

I lived with and was married to, a man who was a racist. The sad thing is, he kept it well hidden for the better part of 12 years.

It was only then that I realized his bigotry went far beyond skin color and encompassed women, cultures and religion.

I have been well rid of him since 1989.
