Andrew Tahmooressi, 22, was arrested for driving into Mexico with firearms
A U.S. Marine Corps reservist who had been living in San Diego will remain in a Mexican jail after firing his attorney.
Andrew Tahmooressi, 22, was expected to testify before a Mexican judge during a court hearing Wednesday. Instead, he fired his attorney. Now the case is up in the air.
On Monday, Tahmooressi's mother Jill told NBC 7 that her son said his attorney had instructed him to lie under oath. Tahmooressi was arrested April 1 after driving his black Ford pickup over the border at San Ysidro into Tijuana. Family members said Tahmooressi, who was in possession of three U.S.-registered firearms, got lost near the border after dark and took a wrong turn into Mexico.
It is illegal to bring guns into Mexico. He has spent the last two months in Mexican custody, first in Tijuana then in Tecate.
Tahmooressi came to San Diego in March for treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder. The Marine reservist, originally from Florida, has served two tours in Afghanistan.
The Marine has gained the support of elected officials, including Rep. Duncan Hunter, Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz and Sen. Marco Rubio. His family has also started a White House petition asking for his release.
Last week, Tahmooressis mother told NBC 6 Miami that she was told Secretary of State John Kerry had discussed her sons release during a recent trip to Mexico. Before Wednesday's hearing, the U.S. State Department released a statement outlining the government's efforts to help the Marine:
The Department of State takes seriously its obligation to assist U.S. citizens abroad, and stands ready to provide all appropriate consular services to U.S. citizens in need. The U.S. Consulate and U.S. Embassy have talked to numerous Mexican officials regarding Mr. Tahmooressis case, including the authorities at the prison and the Mexican Foreign Ministry. On May 6, the Embassy discussed the case with senior officials of Mexicos Office of the Attorney General. Secretary Kerry also raised it during his visit to Mexico on May 21. Consular officers have visited Mr. Tahmooressi eleven times since his arrest on March 31. We have raised any concerns we might have about his treatment with the appropriate authorities.
In a 911 audio recording from the night Tahmooressi was arrested, the Marine told the dispatcher he had driven into Mexico by accident.
Tagmooressi: Ok, yeah, I was hoping that there would be a turnaround point, but there never was." Dispatcher: Theres a turnaround point before you get across the border."
Andrew: Yeah, but now where I was. There was no turnaround point.
Dispatcher: Well, that means you were, well, way far down then. Unfortunately, youre on Mexican soil. Theres nothing we can do. I apologize.
Tahmooressis supporters are scheduled to rally for his release at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in San Ysidro near the U.S.-Mexico border.
Its a mexican court, of course you lie under oath.
WEll, geeze, we let 30 million of their citizens here, red carpet them, in fact.
Heck just in the past two months on two different credit cards of mine, Mexicans have charged $400 in bars near Mexico City.
This Marine needs to fire 0bama.
Mexico has kangaroos?
Those who are kind to the cruel are soon cruel to the kind.
Mid-desert “rescue stations” for them, but nary a phone-call on behalf of this guy.
WHY JOIN the US military at all?
You end up protecting a Regime, not the country.
on Greta tonight, a marine buddy of his said something to the effect that this would not have gone on this long if it was Malia (sp) chained to a bed in Mexico.
Good to hear someone not afraid to speak
Apparently the Mexicans are saying they have video of the marine coming into Mexico numerous times and they think he is selling weapons. It sounds like BS to me.
Thanks Vet
You are no long of use to America, enjoy your stay in Mexico.
Where are Barry’s drones and why hasn’t he hit the Mexicans yet?
Sounds like they are fishing for a bribe.
Yes, I heard that too. Surprisingly it didn’t get cut but that may have been a live segment.
Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz
Shocking. No wonder we haven’t had any negative posts about her lately....lol. Good for her. One thing right out of a lot of wrong.
This Marine can be released in 24 hours....
Cut off all money transfers from the USA to Mexico ....immediately
18 % of the Mexico GDP is Mexicans in the USA sending money home....
Free as a bird in 24 hours...
Active Duty ping.
Yes they want a bribe or just some BS publicty to tweak the nose of the US. The good news about a totally corrupt govt is that you can just cough up the money and walk.
I just came back from Mexico and the guy I was working with (a naturalized Mexican citizen) told me that bribes were a way of life for the corrupt police and judges down there. He had been forced to pay bribes to cops and judges many times.
Yes I have always been told that Mexico is totally corrupt from the top down.
The Marines need to surround the jail and demand his release, or else.
No permission from El Zer0 needed. Just do it.
A battalion commander with balls would go get his boy.
