Snowden Says He Was a Spy, Not Just an Analyst
New York Times ^ | May 28, 2014 | DAVID S. JOACHIM and SCOTT SHANE

Posted on 05/28/2014 7:46:03 AM PDT by Seizethecarp

Edward J. Snowden says he was not merely a “low-level analyst” writing computer code for American spies, as President Obama and other administration officials have portrayed him. Instead, he says, he was a trained spy who worked under assumed names overseas for the Central Intelligence Agency and the National Security Agency.

“I was trained as a spy in sort of the traditional sense of the word in that I lived and worked undercover overseas — pretending to work in a job that I’m not — and even being assigned a name that was not mine,” Mr. Snowden told Brian Williams of NBC News, in an excerpt released in advance of the full interview.

“They’re trying to use one position that I’ve had in a career here or there to distract from the totality of my experience,” he said, “which is that I’ve worked for the Central Intelligence Agency undercover overseas, I’ve worked for the National Security Agency undercover overseas and I’ve worked for the Defense Intelligence Agency as a lecturer at the Joint Counterintelligence Training Academy, where I developed sources and methods for keeping our information and people secure in the most hostile and dangerous environments around the world.”

“The reality is I never intended to end up in Russia,” he said in a second excerpt broadcast on NBC’s “Today Show.” “I had a flight booked to Cuba onwards to Latin America, and I was stopped because the United States government decided to revoke my passport and trap me in Moscow Airport. So when people ask why are you in Russia, I say, ‘Please ask the State Department.' ”

Did you end the evening terribly disappointed? Possibly it was me then.

:)

Yes I’ve been there but a long time ago.

“Calling him a patriot is an insult to TRUE patriots.”

Patriotism depends entirely on the heart behind the actions. I don’t know his heart.

I do approve of his actions.

He ran. He has no courage.

Everyone would run when the largest nation on earth with unlimited spy agencies is trying to catch, kill, or imprison you. Kind David ran from Saul. The Apostle Peter ran from Rome. You are expressing an opinion that I find doubtful at best.

It takes lots of courage to eliminate your future in America for the purpose of exposing a government that is undermining the meaning of America. If you don't survive to tell the story, you cannot expose it.

That would have been honorable.

Honor is situation dependent. Great military leaders throughout history have retreated, hid, survived. They had honor.

Do people have honor who support the undermining of our Constitution?

About the only people who didn’t know what they were doing was the American public.

European leaders certainly knew and cooperated in some cases.

Some material is classified for good reason. Why would the NSA spying on American citizens (without a warrant) be classified?

I’ve read one Brad Thor book (don’t even remember which one) and thoroughly enjoyed it.

Yeah, because the people who were recording all of our phone calls and intercepting all of our emails in a black letter violation of the Constitution are red blooded american patriot heros. That kid did all of us a solid and you would probably be okay with being put against the wall and shot.

"If he was truly concerned he could have run it up the chain, taken it to the IG, and if that didn’t work, to his Senator or Congressman (probably the best avenue)."

Seriously???!!!

What scandal has that worked to correct? Fast and Furious? IRS targeting? VA Hospitals? POTUS eligibility? Voter fraud and ObaMao accepting foreign money? Benghazi? I could go on all day and still wouldn't scratch the surface of the tip of the iceberg...

"He still did irreparable harm to the national security of the country where my kids sleep during a time of war."

Sorry - total BS! The only people who don't know NSA sources and methods are low info voters in the USA.

I want my children to grow up in a constitutional republic, not a frekin militarized police state / bankrupt statist dictatorship with "total situational awareness" to crush all opposition with unlimited resources - and power over every facet of life - including life and death (ObaMao Care).

“While you may appreciate the information coming out, it DOESN’t make him a patriot”

If you found the word, “Patriot,” in my post then shoot me a note. Because I don’t remember writing it.

So, while you may have read my posting, it DOESN’T mean you absorbed the actual meaning of it.

You answer that credibly and I will stop poking well deserved ridicule at you.

Poke away.

While you're at it, you can kiss my...yeah, well you know the rest.

You are not some lifelong civilian. You are supposed to use that brain housing group for something more than a hat rack.

What, are you my mama, now?

Shove it.

“How convenient that you have forgotten that he also revealed some of our international intelligence gathering methods.”

How convenient that you ignored what I wrote.

I’ll give you a second chance. Simple question:

You are saying that you would have gone along with what the NSA was doing instead of revealing their unConstitutional activities to the public?

I notice you were unable to answer the question.

You popped off without thinking and now you have no place intellectually to retreat to.

“Not a fact. Speculation only.”

It’s speculation until you actually do it. I’d say that assumption is reasonable considering how many people subverting the corrupt government have mysteriously died in recent years. I guarantee you there are even more on the inside that we never heard of.

“Not if he went to Congress or US media.”

Ah yes, those bastions of integrity would have taken care of everything and we’d be in a free country by now.

“Another ‘only’ option?”

That option would mean being prosecuted and losing control of the story. He had only ONE option to not be killed AND stay in control of the story- move to an advanced country not friendly to the USA - that only leaves Russia or China. He would have been killed or prosecuted/silenced in any other country. Period.

“Speculation. Prosecution likely and govt spinning just as likely, but media has a life of its own that cannot be controlled.”

If you are free you can still express your view worldwide over the viral internet and nobody has control of that (yet). Snowden would not be doing youtube interviews or posting articles if he was under control of the USA. The government/media would control his story and evidence 100%. If he didn’t end up dead, his story definitely would have.

The honorable course of action if congressional route failed.

That's not honorable. It's stupid. I suppose the colonists were dishonorable because they shot red coats from behind trees and rocks instead of lining up in a row in front of the British troops wearing brightly contrasting clothing.

You used my original post which did comment on calling Snowden a patriot.

Next time, cut the cuteness and just write your own.
