Rand Paul: It's a 'misnomer' to say McConnell isn't conservative

Rand Paul is defending his relationship with Mitch McConnell after helping his fellow Kentuckian defeat a tea party-backed challenger in a GOP Senate primary.

"I came out of the tea party movement. I'm very concerned about the debt. I'm very concerned about big government," Paul said on Friday. "But I think the misnomer is to think somehow Senator McConnell isn't. That's what his whole entire career has been predicated upon - fighting against big government."

The comments by Paul, the state's junior senator, came at a news conference with McConnell in Louisville that was focused on building party unity following a bruising campaign in which the minority leader's opponent, Matt Bevin, got 35 percent of the primary vote.

Some in the conservative grassroots movement immediately called for Republican voters to unite and support McConnell.

But Bevin has been noticeably quiet and hasn't said whether he'll back his rival--though he flatly stated on election night that he won't back the Democratic nominee.

That's not stopping Alison Lundergan Grimes, however. She's actively going after Bevin supporters. In an open letter Friday to the 40 percent of Republican voters who didn't vote for McConnell, she argued that a vote for Grimes is a vote for change.

"Yes, we are in different parties, and we have divergent views on some issues. But if you believe that we need a fresh face to shake up Washington, I invite you to join our campaign," the letter stated.

Bevin hit back later Friday with his own letter, saying she doesn't understand "the principles that united my campaign's supporters" and disparaged her stance on a number of items on her agenda.

He agreed with her that Kentucky needs change, but not her kind of change. He made no direct mention of McConnell in the letter.

“Besides, he promised me all kinds of campaign money from the fat cats and a committee chairmanship if I play along. What do you peasants know, anyhow?”

His real enemy is Harry Reid??

He declared war on the TEA Party and says if he becomes majority leader he will basically share power with the democrats.

Too bad that doesn’t work here, readers can see how shallow your position is when you can’t answer the challenges we post to your nonsense.

For instance, being a site of conservatives and Reagan Republicans that despises the GOPe, they notice things like this.

“”Sure the GOPe is an enemy to conservatives and Reagan republicans.””.

People forget that Rand Paul was an enthusiastic and fully committed supporter and campaigner for Mitt Romney.

Like I said, I fear Grimes more than McConnell.
She will be lot harder on my pocketbook, not to mention
open business for abortions on demand.

My heart weeps for the babies being butchered by abortionists well after those babies are grown enough to feel the same amount of as any living human being.

No way I am going to do anything to help Grimes.

Come on GERONL, that is a bit of a stretch, really.

Better the enemy we know and see than the traitor in our midst that works to undermine us and shoot us from behind.

Grimes has not declare war on Conservatives and vow to ‘crush us everywhere they find us’. McConnell HAS, and very publicly.

Principles are more valued to me than my stupid pocketbook. But apparently that is the limit for most in the GOP which helps go to explain why McConnell wins over a challenger.

Grimes will reveal the inscriptions on her chest day after she has gained power. Why would she do that before election? She may be a hard lefty but she is not stupid.

I do not trust ANY rat as far as I can throw them. Not a single one! I hate their abortion agenda, their love for higher taxes, and their love to make more and more dependents on gov’t dole.

I think this is just a manifestation that Rand Paul is going to make a run for the GOP nomination for 2016.

He’s walking that line on the tops of the fence posts in trying to maintain some semblance of Tea Party yet nuzzle the GOPe Powerati at the same time.

He’ll never get my vote.

I HATE McConnell, but I sincerely hope the good folks of Kentucky HATE
any DEM more!!!!! I fear our loss of the senate again due to our own side
trying to prove some point!!!! I hope our side has more sense than what happened to Mitt due to our own side, regardless of MUSHY MITT, he
would have been far better than the Marxist we have now!!!! At least he
has leadership skills he definitely was NOT conservative enough but
he also WAS NOT A MARXIST!!!!

I guess Rand Paul’s leaving the pro-life column as he shifts to “exceptions” and no new laws bothers you, since you keep bringing up your passion on abortion?

I don’t trust the GOP leadership as far as you can throw them either. Not a single one!

I hate their status quo agenda, pretending to be Conservative while actually helping the ‘rats further and entrench their MarxoFascist agenda by warring on Conservatives. I hate their drunken sailor spending which is almost on pace with the ‘rats and their complete surrender to the Leftists.

Better an enemy in the seat that we know than a traitor from within who openly declared war on Conservatives and vowed to “crush us everywhere they find us”.

The loss of the KY seat to Grimes will have been totally McConnell’s own doing.

HE is the one who publicly declared war on Conservatives and vowed to ‘crush them wherever they find them”.

Any Conservative who votes for McConnell is an idiot and apparently has battered wife syndrome.

I can understand your feelings. But if you dig down far enough you will discover that Harry Reid as SML is far more harmful to the conservative agenda than McConnell in senate.

Personally I think McConnell is a politician first and conservative second. But he is no where as harmful as Reid.

You think that when seeing your repeated mentions of being passionately pro-life on a Paul thread and your support for him, that it isn’t logical to ask you if you are bothered by his dropping the pro-life position and disagreeing with the GOP pro-life platform?

I realize that I’m talking to an immature person who keeps telling us that he puts his fingers in his ears and pretends he can’t see someone posting to him on a public forum, but can you explain what is illogical about my post?

The other option was enthusiastic and fully committed supporter and campaigner for Barack Obama... Who else would he have supported?

I agree and I hope we don’t lose the senate because of someone trying to prove a point. Such as the gopE trying to prove a point that they can slander conservatives, call us wacko birds and say they’re going to destroy us but still get our votes. A point they’ve already made is they can run as tea partiers then fall in line with the establishment as soon as they’re sworn in.
