It hardly gets more Orwellian than this. New technology would allow cable companies to peer directly into television watchers homes and monitor viewing habits and reactions to product advertisements.
The technology would come via the cable box, and at least one lawmaker on Capitol Hill is standing in opposition.

The second that is implemented, my cable service is gone, and I will encourage everyone I know to do likewise. I guess they figure that with all the others ways people accept being monitored, they will accept this too. Unfortunately, they may be right.
This is a year old. It’s been going on for years.
I cannot disagree with anything in your post. We watch PoI and tell each other how it’s so _not_ science fiction.
I have been wondering if the YA market is so into dystopian themes because they are trying to resolve a cognitive dissonance that is not addressed in their education. They know something is terribly wrong with our society and they hunger for some sort of role model that will teach them how to respond to it.
I guess they figure that with all the others ways people accept being monitored, they will accept this too. Unfortunately, they may be right.

I refuse to shop anywhere there is a shopping card. I notice at least one of the big chains, Shaws has stopped their card program. Unfortunately Walgreens and Rite aid have one. Both have lost my business to Wal-Mart
Now old Yakov Smirnoff jokes apply to this county.
“In America, Television watches you.”
Best me to it. Duct tape is your friend.
There are a few variables that will matter. How far from the broadcast stations you live, antenna height, whether there is an obstruction in the direction of a signal, etc. My philosophy for a home that is further away from broadcast stations is to go for as much surface area/most elements on the antenna as you can reasonably afford.
As for small antennas with amplifiers, if you live not too far away from a broadcast station, they will work just fine. But if the signal is weak and the antenna is small, the amplifier will only have a very noisy signal to amplify, so it will still result in poor reception.
The website below is a good resource in determining the size of antenna to purchase. Keep in mind that if your antenna will be low or obstructed, you may need to up-size.

Like the lurker in the window. It isn’t inside yet but could be all too soon.
No doubt the feed will go straight to O’s decision making drone room
Good idea. Jewel, the big supermarket chain here, dropped theirs too.
Norton blocked the website you posted, saying it is a known malicious website.
Huh. I wonder what the government will do since I have no cable or satellite, no webcam, and my phones are Net10s with points card paid by cash?
Then any time people turn on the TV the robotic spider sneaks out and takes pictures of everyone's faces and transmits them back to HQ.
That way they can tell exactly how many people are watching each program, and how compelling the programming is.
If you crush the spider it's gonna cost you a whole bunch of money, cuz that's one expensive spider!
They try that excrement and I have no problem cancelling my cable service permanently. Seriously. If they announced that policy Tuesday, by COB Wednesday I would no longer be a cable tv subscriber.
“This article is a year old. Why are you posting it now?”
I’m glad he did. I was thinking about ending my cable TV hiatus.
“I have no cable or satellite”
How do you get on the Internet?
Keep people alert!
“but how about if you want your local news. “
Maybe it’s because I grew up in DC, where national news was the local news, but why would anyone ever watch local news? Not being facetious, just curious. What’s the appeal? Is it really a necessity or even a good use of time to know the stories they run on such broadcasts?
