PetSmart is the latest major pet food retailer to say it will stop selling dog and cat treats made in China because of ongoing fears that they are making pets sick.
The company plans to have the treats off all of its store shelves by March 2015.
"This is something we've been working toward for some time, and feel it's the right thing to do for pets and our customers," said PetSmart spokeswoman Erin Gray.
Investigators at the U.S. Food and Drug Administration haven't been able to prove that treats made in China are making pets ill. But since 2007, it has received more than 4,800 complaints of pet illnesses and more than 1,000 reports of dog deaths after eating Chinese-made chicken, duck or sweet potato jerky treats.

if anything,it may cause a domino affect,especially with our millions of pet owners.the ones that dine out time to time will probably have second thoughts about eating chinese with this scandal going viral.,it will be like them saying, god,u mean i may be poising my own dog?,i don’t think i will be eating chinese anytime soon.

Well then I guess Petsmart won’t be selling any dog chews because recently I went there to get some and every bag said “made in China”. I finally got some in the grocery store.
“I guess we have to wait until we have 1000+ people deaths. Of course linking those deaths to china when the products arent labeled is going to be really difficult.”
So true. Now half the stuff only says “distributed by so and so in Cincinnati or wherever. That’s codespeak for made in China as far as we are concerned. We just put it back on the shelf.
That's what I think too. "Distributed by" without a "Made in USA" designation throws up a big red flag.
Wife just tossed about $40 worth of dog treats after hearing about this...
Be sure to check frozen vegetables for country of origin...found that the frozen asparagus we bought was from China...didn’t eat it...went straight to the trash...always looking now...at EVERYTHING!
