U.S. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito issued an order late Tuesday suspending the planned execution of a Missouri inmate with a little more than an hour to spare before the inmate's scheduled lethal injection.
Alito, who handles emergency matters for Missouri and other states covered by the 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, didn't explain why he issued the order suspending Russell Bucklew's execution, which had been scheduled for 12:01 a.m. Wednesday. But Missouri Attorney General Chris Koster issued a statement saying his office understands the full Supreme Court would consider Bucklew's requests on Wednesday.
Under Missouri law, the state has 24 hours to carry out a death warrant, meaning it could still execute Bucklew anytime on Wednesday if the high court rejects his appeals.
Alito's order came shortly after the full 8th Circuit court lifted a stay granted to Bucklew hours earlier by a three-judge panel of that court.
Bucklew, who was sentenced to death for killing a southeast Missouri man in 1996, suffers from a rare medical condition that his attorneys claim could cause him great pain during the execution process.

Every single death-penalty article refers to the recent Oklahoma execution as “botched”. Does that mean the execution failed? Is Clayton Lockett still alive?
He’s scared? Fine, beat the SOB with a hammer instead. In front of his children, if possible.
Once again Washington overrules the states. This has got to stop!
Any docs out there who could tell us - first put a sedative in his last meal, then local in the area of his chest, then a needle directly to his heart with the fatal drug. The thing is, there has to be one person willing to plunge that needle. Up to know the device is not seen nor the person pushing the plunger known in most executions.
Alito - Another “gift” from Bush that just keeps giving.
Firing squad would solve these problems nicely.
load him up with 200 mcg of fentanyl and 8 mg of versed prior to executing him. He won’t feel a thing.
WGAF?
Even worse than "Washington" continually overruling the states is the many instances of a lone Federal judge overturning the expressed will of the people of a state.
U.S. District Judge Michael J. McShane, the first openly gay federal judge in Oregon, overturned a state constitutional amendment banning same-sex unions which passed (57% to 43%) in the November 2, 2004 general election.
Bucklew was shot and wounded during his arrest. I doubt that anything that happens tonight will be as painful as that.
I agree! We had one Legislator who was supposed to try to get a bill passed to have the firing squad as an alternative/back up to lethal injection - I bet this crap would stop if that happens.
Put a breathing mask on him, give him nitrous oxide (laughing gas) until he passes out, then slowly increase the percentage of nitrous oxide to 100%, and maintain until he dies.
What if Bucklew required surgery? I assume the same medical condition that his attorneys say could lead to pain and suffering during the execution might also result in pain and suffering during an IV. Does that mean the state couldn’t give him medical care? Cruel punishment and all?
My thought exactly.
He has lived 18 years longer than the person he murdered.
Works for me.
From the article:
“Bucklew . . . killed Sanders in front of Pruitt and the four children. He handcuffed and beat Pruitt, drove her to a secluded area and raped her.
Later, after a state trooper spotted the car, Bucklew shot at the trooper but missed, authorities say. Bucklew was grazed in the head and hospitalized. He later escaped from jail, hid in the home of Pruitt’s mother and beat her with a hammer. She escaped, and Bucklew was arrested a short time later.”
How much pain did these people suffer?
What the Hell is the matter with Alito?
