Top California Republican strategists are becoming increasingly nervous about a race the party almost certainly cannot win.
There is little hope that whichever Republican makes it through the Golden States top-two primary June 3 can beat Gov. Jerry Brown (D). The states economy is rebounding, revenues are surpassing expectations, Browns approval ratings are strong and his campaign war chest is flush with cash.
But Republicans are concerned by Assemblyman Tim Donnelly (R), an arch-conservative who takes a hard line on social issues, especially on immigration, and has a penchant for making offensive statements.
With Donnelly at the top of the ticket, party strategists worry that he will drag down other Republicans running for office in November, further damaging the GOP brand in a state where Democrats enjoy near-super majority status.
Polls show Donnelly outpacing former Bush administration official Neel Kashkari (R) for second place in the top-two primary. The most recent Public Policy Institute of California survey, conducted the second week in April, showed Brown leading all candidates with 46 percent of the vote; Donnelly took 9 percent, while Kashkari clocked in at just 2 percent, below the polls margin of error.
The fight for the right to lose to Brown matters because Republicans and Democrats are battling over a handful of contested U.S. House races, too. Republicans are aiming to knock off Reps. Ami Bera (D), Julia Brownley (D), Raul Ruiz (D) and Scott Peters (D), while Democrats hope to beat Rep. David Valadao (R) and win back seats held by retiring Reps. Gary Miller (R) and Buck McKeon (R).

Tim Donnelly for Governor!
Go Donnelly!
“arch-conservative” Real winner of a word there.
WIth a republican GOVERNOR....California would then become RIPE....for a RETURN to SANITY?
its the COASTALS....that despise AMERICA..
that movement to divide the state would of necessity need to have most of the COASTAL AREAS become One State leaving the rest of the state in the hands of ADULTS!!
I’m pretty sure that California is going to have to go the way of Detroit before anyone will start ask themselves how the state of California ended up ruined and before they will ever think of electing someone with an R after their name.
And Arnold doesn’t count...he is a hollyweirdo and about as right as a new england republican, which makes him a democrat.
God forbid he actually opposes illegal immigration. /s
I am voting for Donnelly in our primary a couple of weeks from now.
But that said the headline of this article is silly-—”Republicans worry over California governor’s race” is silly. Of course we have no chance against Gov. Moonbeam in deep blue one-party CA.
This is a silly as a headline saying, “Democrats worry over Texas governor’s race.” IMHO.
Karl Rove wants his moderate! its not fair! waaah!
it is?
Only in the 1%ers neighborhoods.
If you don’t expect to win anyway, why do they worry?
Uh...the first part is a bit true in the Santa Clara valley, and the second part is an outright lie
When you see that code word in an article you automatically know how the author votes. Has the WA Post ever called anyone an "arch-liberal?"
Brown is a lock. The Republican MIGHT get 40% of the Vote in the General, no matter who the Candidate is. The “R” label alone will insure that, whether they are GOPe or a Tea Party Conservative.
Yesterday Brown was out blaming “Globull Warming” for the recent Wildfires instead of blaming the actual cause, Arsonists.
The Idiots here gulp down that Globull Warming stuff by the gallon, and Brown shows up with a truck load of it.
Anyone have a good voters guide for SoCal area? Thanks
“If you dont expect to win anyway, why do they worry?”
They want the “right person” to lose to Brown.
Ronald Reagan: Our people look for a cause to believe in. Is it a third party we need, or is it a new and revitalized second party, raising a banner of no pale pastels, but bold colors which make it unmistakably clear where we stand on all of the issues troubling the people.
GOPe: “It’s obvious of course. Pale pastels all the way to victory!”
