The U.S. military has always been the one place in government with a plan, forever in preparation mode and ready to yank a blueprint off the shelf for almost any contingency. Need a response for a Russian nuclear missile launch? Check. Have to rescue a U.S. ambassador kidnapped by drug lords? Got that covered. How about a detailed strategy for surviving a zombie apocalypse? As it turns out, check.
Incredibly, the Defense Department has a response if zombies attacked and the armed forces had to eradicate flesh-eating walkers in order to "preserve the sanctity of human life" among all the "non-zombie humans."
Buried on the military's secret computer network is an unclassified document, obtained by Foreign Policy, called "CONOP 8888." It's a zombie survival plan, a how-to guide for military planners trying to isolate the threat from a menu of the undead from chicken zombies to vegetarian zombies and even "evil magic zombies" and destroy them.

Depends on how you define "zombie". The plan itself is probably pretty flexible, just replace "zombie' with "Tea Party" and your plan of action is still in place.
Yep, Zombie is just a nice way to say “urban” or “conservatives” or whatever internal threat that just happens to have to be shot in the head.
I have never watched a Walking Dead show. I cannot escape the endless ads and trailers. I always have thought the purpose of the series was to deaden people to shooting other people in the head without remorse.
It’s too late and the plan doesn’t work. The zombies are already in control of Washington, D.C. and most northern cities. They have infiltrated the military and are seeking to establish complete control throughout the heartland. Fortunately, this strain of Zombie sp. doesn’t actually eat the victims brain; they simply homogenize it with public education and inject toxins as they need too for populace control thus creating new ranks of fellow zombies. The only known antidote is communicating truth and, as of the time of this writing, they essentially control the major information outlets in the country and throughout the world.
zombie is code for:
low information voter riots,
isolation of a disease (let them die zones),
rednecks,
starving liberals,
asynchronous invaders (illegal alien mobs)
Really? That’s why you think they made a tv show out of the comic?
Exactly!
The DoD's plan is in place just in case another breed of zombies tries to takeover from the current zombies in office.
We have a bunch of liberal zombies.
I’ve seen the TV show but don’t know anything about the comic, what year did the comic first come out?
Yeh Zombie means veteran, constitutionalist, Christian, heterosexual, anti abortion etc.
CONOP 8888? A relation of yours???
Actually a big part of the plot is remorse, people grappling with having to rekill dead loved ones, and the emotional fallout of actions needed to survive.
I’m not telling ;)
They aren't as constrained by what they know and think they know. (Before WWII it was assumed that Japanese couldn't be effective pilots because they had no sense of balance!)
I’ve never really been a fan of zombie apocalypse movies and such. “Night of the Living Dead” was a midnight movie cult classic when I was in college, for the same reason as “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”: it was an excuse to get out of the dorm late at night, meet girls, make them squeal and get them drunk.
Medically speaking, the entire concept of a zombie is just freakin ridiculous at first glance. The brain deteriorates to the point of not functioning after ten minutes without oxygen. So the idea of shooting, bashing or stabbing a zombie in the head to destroy it — I refuse to say “kill,” since you can’t kill something that’s already dead — compounds the ridiculous nature of this. A zombie brain isn’t functioning in the first place, so it’s kind of like appealing to a Hollywood Democrat’s sense of decency.
The two most recent efforts in this genre, however, have been a pleasant surprise. “World War Z” posits a zombie virus that animates the corpse after ten seconds — which is certainly a timespan that’s brief enough to keep the brain alive. And “The Walking Dead” posits a zombie which is controlled from the brain stem, which can survive much longer than the rest of the brain without oxygen.
Both of these works exhibit real plots, quality character development and relationships among survivors, and group dynamics that were either pitiful or simply nonexistent in earlier shows, such as “Night of the Living Dead.”
Enough criticism of “the cinema” such as it is ... let’s take a look at the DoD plan. The zombie apocalypse idea is so far-fetched: even assuming that a WWZ or TWD type virus could develop or be developed, it would have to spread and the contagion would have to be rapid.
This is what leads me to believe that “zombie” might be a code word for something else.
The zombie plan still works if you have a biowarfare strain that interferes with upper logic functions and/or makes people violent.
It’s just a useful scenario to war game. Really if you throw out the fantastical element what you have in a zombie scenario is this:
80% of the people are gone
about half of them have been “replaced” with highly contagious psychopaths
the infrastructure is gone
command structure has become nearly impossible to maintain
there will be no resupply
What do you do?
It’s an excellent worst case scenario to study. Made more useful by the large quantity of movies, books and now even TV shows that have worked in that ground, giving you a lot reasons why things that seem like good ideas might not actually work. All the best stuff within the genre is focused a lot more on how humans deal with this situation and how the situation changes them than on the zombies. There’s a lot of fertile ground for people who are in charge of people to consider.
Early this century I believe.
