Researchers Who Provided Key Evidence For Gluten Sensitivity Have Now Thoroughly Shown That It Doesn't Exist

In one of the best examples of science working, a researcher who provided key evidence of (non-celiac disease) gluten sensitivity recently published follow-up papers that show the opposite.

The first follow-up paper came out last year in the journal Gastroenterology. Here's the backstory that makes us cheer:

The study was a follow up on a 2011 experiment in the lab of Peter Gibson at Monash University. The scientifically sound — but small — study found that gluten-containing diets can cause gastrointestinal distress in people without celiac disease, a well-known autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten.

They called this non-celiac gluten sensitivity.

Gluten is a protein composite found in wheat, barley, and other grains. It gives bread its chewiness and is often used as a meat substitute. If you've ever had "wheat meat," seitan, or mock duck at a Thai restaurant, that's gluten.

Gluten is a big industry: 30% of people want to eat less gluten. Sales of gluten-free products are estimated to hit $15 billion by 2016.

Although experts estimate that only 1% of Americans — about 3 million people — suffer from celiac disease, 18% of adults now buy gluten-free foods.

Since gluten is a protein found in any normal diet, Gibson was unsatisfied with his finding. He wanted to find out why the gluten seemed to be causing this reaction and if there could be something else going on. He therefore went to a scientifically rigorous extreme for his next experiment, a level not usually expected in nutrition studies.

For a follow-up paper, 37 self-identified gluten-sensitive patients were tested. According to Real Clear Science's Newton Blog, here's how the experiment went:

Some humans have been eating grain for about 1% of the species history. Some other humans do not process this foreign substance well.

And now these aholes are trying to say: well, either you’re 100% allergic to gluten or 0% allergic

Did you miss the part of the results that show no difference between high, low and no gluten diets?

Some other humans do not process this foreign substance well.

Probably because of the way it is served giant quantities, overcooked and drowning in acidic slop like marinara sauce. Most humans can probably process grain when eaten naturally: raw, chewed thoroughly since it is raw, and eaten alone as an alternative to starvation since nothing else is available. Like most other diet maladies, the problem turns out to be culture not ingredients.

The whole aim of practical politics is to keep the populace alarmed (and hence clamorous to be led to safety) by menacing it with an endless series of hobgoblins, all of them imaginary.

How many glutens are there? How many shapes and types of allergens are there? Allergy to gluten is like being allergic to Black Walnut pollen but not allergic to pine pollen. I know, that’s a hard thing to grasp, even if you’re not allergic to catnip but are allergic to cat dander.

I've eaten raw grain. Grain has to be cooked if you want to avoid severe gastric distress.

Oops, forgot:
The Earth is flat;
The Sun revolves around the Earth;

Really? about gluten? Other those few with the disease mentioned above, most complaints are probably from simple bloating and gas due to grain sensitivity. I probably keep Beano in business because I always have to take it before my raison bran in the morning or other grain products. So what? Jeeze, folks, buy a bottle of Beano - it's cheap. If that doesn't work, there is always Gas-X afterwards.

Here's my whine: I have to take Beano before I drink dark beer. Poor me.

Guess lactose intolerant folks have some kind of disease that just hasn't been properly funded and researched with an agenda.

I knew this whole gluten thing was BS, even told my wife who has to buy me Beano every week when grocery shopping. Again, proven correct.

"Big Pharm can’t patent something that’s helping people, time to “debunk” it with their “studies”!"

Actually, this study is correct. Try some Beano. It works for those of us who get bloated, gas, intestinal discomfort due to sensitivity to certain grains. Just try it before you eat grains. It's two little pills and will alleviate your gastro discomfort. It's a little hassle, but works. I now know others (aging population) who take Beano after long suffering gastro distress and glad the "big pharm" invented it. What do you think? Some guy in garage came up with a biological distress remedy?

Yes, "big pharm" is sometimes wrong and definitely charge too much in the US for some of their products. However, they spend billions of dollars for products that cure or relieve our ailments. My gripe is the same products are cheaper around the world. But then, that's capitalism. They spend the big bucks to research and go through the long complex FDA approval process, then they should get their investment back.

Just try it. Some products actually work.

This is a very confusing issue as are all allergies/sensitives. We are not all the same. What makes one person better, messes the next person up. Just get a copy of IBS For Dummies and check it out.

I eat whatever I want, whenever I want, and as how much as I want. It's worked for me, and I'm not a miserable person religiously checking labels.

I've got a life to live, I don't have time for a hobby like made-up food allergies.

"...chewed thoroughly..."

Please, ever heard of stomach acid? While it best to send your food down in smaller parts, you could eat a big enough "raw" piece of food and your stomach acid would still tear it apart. Although, admit it may give you a stomach ache or acid reflux. Still, the acid will desolve it enough to flow through the intestines.

BTW, although there are probably too many extra ingredients in our foods (most for preservation), "raw" food is a fallacy. People have been living longer and longer if they just eat a normal/balanced amount of even processed foods. That's not counting medical care.

The best experiments are the the ones you do yourself on yourself, so if it works for you, even if it’s placebo, don’t worry about what anybody else says.

Although as humans we share many traits we also have may things that are unique to each one of us, so we do react differently to various things.

It’s interesting though that this study was about gastrointestinal problems, but you claim that it has helped you with your arthritis.

"I always order extra gluten."

YOU'RE GONNA DIE! Whole grains are now on the same level as butter or is it sugar or is red meat or is it steroid fed chickens or is it mercury in salmon or ... I forget.

Think I'll have a cigarette and some rum to think it over. It's 5 o'clock somewhere in the world.

Why should people pop more pills, Beano or otherwise, when they can avoid eating certain things and feel great?

Are these the same scientists that put together Big Gov’s (insanely faulty) food pyramid?

People have been helping themselves using simple dietary adjustments like Docters Atkins and Agatson suggest, and they’re experiencing results beyond weight loss. Scientists tell us to avoid fat and cholesterol, yet on these diets cholesterol is lowered. Many docs are still selling that line when it turns out sugar is the culprit for high cholesterol, not cholesterol intake.

Some of us don’t like popping pills for problems, and would rather make dietary adjustments. If you want to pop pills be my guest, to each his/her own. I’m personally uncomfortable with Big Pharm’s passionate relationship with Big Gov. Too many pockets being lined.

I am very happy for you and your lack of allergies, some of us are not so lucky. I am 74 years old and in excellent health, the only problems I have had in my life were allergy related.

When my tongue swells up so big that I can’t keep it in my mouth or I have a blinding headache so bad my vision is affected I am not making anything up. How could I make up my face swelling or red hives around my middle?

I wish it would all go away and I could be as lucky as you but it doesn’t seem to be happening.

I love crusty bread, so the thought of living gluten free is abhorrent.

My sister was told by a quack doctor she had a gluten intolerance...after she had eaten the same way for nearly 60 years. My sister was gluten free all while dying of undiagnosed kidney cancer, nearly two years. I guess a gluten free diet does not treat kidney cancer. I am still very angry and feel that stupidity killed my sister. She had symptoms of something being wrong, and it was cancer. When she finally got really sick her husband took her to the ER and they were able to diagnose her kidney cancer in a matter of hours. The quack doctor had no clue.
