Tea Party Express co-founder Sal Russo wrote an op-ed piece for Roll Call on May 14 entitled Conservatives Need to Fix the Broken Immigration System. In his commentary, Russo addressed what he sees as several major problems with our current immigration system, including the fact that immigration laws are not enforced, our present visa system is inadequate to supply our economic needs, border security is ineffective, and there are rich incentives for illegal immigration.
Russo expanded on these problems in language that is especially appealing to conservatives focused on the economic aspects of immigration, both legal and illegal. For example:
Our laws today are unenforced and citizens and companies who play by the rules are undermined by bad actors who do not. This undermines our rule of law and slows our economic growth. In todays global economy, we cannot afford the status quo.
Our economy has long outgrown the visa programs we have now. In high-skilled industries such as engineering and medicine, we do not have the talent we need to fill the jobs. These industries are the fastest growing in the country and we depend on them for job creation and economic growth.
Visa limits for seasonal workers, such as those needed by farmers, cannot keep up with demand. And those visas that are available are too cumbersome, complex and cost prohibitive for many employers to use. That means fewer fruits and vegetables per season, lost revenue and an increased reliance on imports
According to the Partnership for a New American Economy, only 7 percent of green cards are granted based on economic grounds. In other countries, its as high as 50 percent and they will win in the long term if we do not adapt our policies to the global marketplace.

It depends on what he means by “fix” the broken immigration system.
In my view it is broken because we put people who have obeyed our laws and applied to come here LEGALLY through 7 to 10 years in Bureaucrat Hell.
While at the same time rewarding shameless lawbreakers repeatedly.
There should be no discussion on reform that doesn’t start with real proven border security and immigration law enforcement.
Troops on the border if that’s what it takes. There must be a stipulation that they are allowed to intercept and turn back illegal border crossers. If fired upon they can return fire.
I am thinking Sal Russo was placed there by the republican party to undermine the Tea party.
Russo has used Tea Party Express to raise a lot of money of which little goes to advancing Tea Party issues.
Tea Party has no leaders, although some like Russo and Armey claim to be one. Tea Party is a spontaneous arousal of like minded individuals. Russo and his ilk have seized on it to make money for themselves.
I’m asking if this article is fair to Russo and also where most members of Tea Party Express think the organization is going to land regarding amnesty.
Build the wall now!
Laura Ingrahan had Russo on as guest on her 5/15 talk show and she really gave him a going over for his stance on “amnesty” and “immigration”.. Not familiar with this reporting venue or Warren Mass yet that’s pretty much of what Russo’s position was on that show. But if you want to hear and see hell fire comming out of someone’s mouth on the issue of “amnesty” Laura Ingraham is a real dragon lady. And 100% on target.
The thing that gets me about this question is that no one is bringing up the rights of American expatriates living legally in Mexico while we are advocating giving away full citizenship rights to those Mexican nationals living here illegally.
Many thanks for responding to my questions. I knew about the Ingraham show but information from the Tea Party Express has been stalled, or stanched, or dammed up, or something like that. Still want to learn more about where TPX is headed in this matter.
Friday must be a bad day for posting on FR. Guess I’ll try to get more information about this very controversial news item from other sources than FR.
Absolutely untrue.
Tea Party is a spontaneous arousal of like minded individuals.
That's one way of putting it and is true, and understood by Russo and the Tea Party Express.
Russo and his ilk have seized on it to make money for themselves.
Concerning Russo, completely untrue. Whatever you mean by "his ilk," probably true concerning many of them.
I filed for unemployment last week because of my field in Physical Layout Design is going over to India. We’re screwed, at least I am, for a while.
Why is it time and time again America always has a shortage of engineering employess ? When much of it relates to the firms can offer lower pay to workers coming here on Visa’s ? Any talent from another country who is a dr would come here and have to learn it all over again.. Medical practices are not the same in every country. They all have their own system of medicine. With over 300 million people here in America we cannot find enough engineers ???
Re Ingraham/ Russo interview
Over where I am local station WHFR 1320 (Wisconsin Rapids) has her on from 2-4 pm.Not her topic today. But Russo said he will be polling members this week. She was really on his case and tore apart some of the arguments you posted.
polling members?
We have the laws. The problem is in lack of enforcement. The only change I would make is to state specifically that being born in this country does not make one a citizen if parents are foreign nationals.
In the News/Activism forum, on a thread titled Founder of Tea Party Express Calls to Fix Immigration System, GeronL wrote: To my report of the Ingraham /Russo interview
polling members?
That’s what he said.
Is he suggesting that his political stances depend on this polling? That TPX makes decisions based on these member polls? Did he poll members before he made those statements on amnesty?
