Fencing, an Olympic sport sponsored by more than 30 NCAA schools, involves two athletes engaging in what is effectively a sword fight with a foil, saber, or épée. The equipment is blunted and does not have any actual blades or sharp tips. Unfortunately, for the newly-formed club fencing team at North Dakota State University, fencing equipment counts as a weapon, and the club has been barred from practicing on campus.

A properly trained man walking on the campus with his bare hands outside his pockets is also a potentially deadly weapon. They gonna ban these too?

I guess they’d better remove the forks and steak knives from the campus dining halls, too. Sharp and pointy metal things, they are!
I wonder if the school has an archery class?

Indeed, forks and knives ARE sharp and pointy.
BTW, I looked up the clubs/teams/activities at NDSU, and found that while they do not have an archery club, they DO have a track and field team. Wonder what they think of having all those dangerous javelins around.
They also have a Marksmanship Club, which meets at a local gun range.

What if they also start a competition skeet/target shooting club? Will that be a problem?

They do know this not build on the Mexicon boarder type of fencing.

Not sure about the PhDs. From what I understand, it is the Police and Safety Office director who made this asinine decision. His name is Ray Boyer. Here’s his contact page at the university:

PS: But a double dose of PhD is usually a great indicator of just how much BS one can sling.
I have a nephew who’s had two colleges offer him fencing scholarships. Oh, and he’s “Mensa” league, academically.
Too bad, so sad for ND State.
Well, the Bisons don’t have a history of being the “Fighting Sioux”...
My son is also a fencer. While he will not be attending a college with a fencing team (the only Catholic colleges with teams are...well...not very Catholic), he hopes to start at least a club at his new school.
