I'm no fan of Obama, but this goes way beyond him. This nation has been plagued with a problem of overbuilt retail space for decades. If you look at the ratio of retail space to population in this country since World War II, you'll find that this was relatively stable until the 1980s then increased dramatically after that.
The simple truth is that even without the growth of internet sales, we don't need all the shopping centers that have been built over the last 50 years.
