Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on Monday will host an Internet discussion aimed at uncovering why young black and Hispanic men are less successful in the job market and in school, and what causes encounters between them and law enforcement.
The discussion is part of President Barack Obamas My Brothers Keeper initiative, which the administration announced in February. That initiative created a task force including Duncan as education secretary, and is meant to develop proposals to enhance positive outcomes and eliminate or reduce negative ones for young black and Hispanic men.
In his February announcement, Obama said many groups have recognized that persistent gaps in employment, educational outcomes, and career skills remain for many boys and young men of color throughout their lives. He said many of these boys and men are behind both in school and in job training, and said underemployed or incarcerated men undermines family and community stability and is a drag on state and federal budgets.
Duncans discussion on Monday afternoon will focus on jobs, the criminal justice system and education.
On jobs, Duncan plans to ask participants the biggest reason why these young men are less successful in the job market than other young people. Suggested answers are insufficient education or skills, inadequate connections or networking, or employer stereotypes.
On the issue of criminal justice, Duncan will ask what cause interactions by boys and young men of color with the juvenille/criminal justice system. Suggested answers here include exposure to violence, a lack of positive influences, and biased law enforcement.
And on education, Duncan will ask how to improve education, and suggests the need for a more engaging curriculum, improved teacher quality, early access to college-level work, and increased collaboration between schools, families and communities.
Duncan will also ask how to improve the graduation rate, and proposes more financial aid, lower college costs, and better guidance when applying to college as possible answers. It also proposes shorter pathways to a high wage career, and a culturally relevant educational environment as other possible answers.
I came here to say this. In fact, I am almost afraid to, but here it is: I work in a place with 22 co-workers. We are a mixed bunch, 3 black, 9 white (2 of whom are Jewish), 1 Asian, 10 Hispanic. It's always the black and Hispanic ones who are late. Late for work, late for meetings, very nebulous lunch hours... more absentee-ism... I don't know what it is about us white people, but to us, "be there at 8am" means "be there at 7:45," and calling in sick is something we only do if there is blood, vomit, or a protruding bone concerned.
When we get sent off for training, the white ones are always there first. We're like compulsive. And I am literally nervous at admitting that I have noticed this. But I can't help noticing it! My black and Hispanic co-workers are warm, wonderful, friendly, nice people. But DAMNED if you can find them sometimes.
The teachers are mostly or all black and the students are mostly or all black, and the mayor and school board are mostly or all black. So you can imagine what it would take for the students to come out on top. The ominous reverberations of "that's racist!" are beginning to be heard already.
Sounds like a huge mess, now if one of those teachers came out gay it would throw everything off.

That is the problem. I don't for a minute believe it has to do with IQ. It has to do with culture, environment, and pride.
If we could just figure out how to keep these folks from being disenfranchised and educate them, the nation's productivity would take off like a rocket!
Unfortunately, the culture and the education system has failed them, and the root cause of the failure is found in the "good intentions" of the progressives.

UUUHHH, because most of them are gang bangers and drug users?

Oh,
you must be a typical “white man keeping the negro down”.
When I hire young workers, I want someone that I can get rid of no questions asked. I might need to layoff for economic reasons, and I do not need any additional headache. I just may need to get rid of someone cause they are not working out. It is really very simple, whites are the easiest to get rid of, therefore they have the most opportunity available to them.

of what is before them, glory and danger alike,
and yet notwithstanding, go out to meet it."~Thucydides
Yep. "Suit up and show up" is a mottos in 12-Step groups as well. Maybe it needs to get translated into Spanish and whatever the ghetto language is called these days.
It really is a cultural thing, but needs to be an Hispanic/Black thing as well. How can you translate it? Come to think of it, whatever happened to positive slogans framed on lunchroom walls? "Get to work on time" kinda stuff
.
Not “you”, but your “whiteness”.
Your mere existence is keeping them down.
Seriously, when your culture is inherently in opposition to “what works”, you’re going to be “less successful”.
So, the real answer is simple, assimilate!
You’ve completely solved the problem!
If’n the white man would get his foot offamy throat I could be somebody!
Ask any lib, and of course they’ll give you that answer.
It’s axiomatic and not subject to any sort of scrutiny.
