Conservative radio talk show host Michael Savage says if Pope Francis wants income redistribution he should start with his own Church.
On his Friday show, Savage said he would bid $1 million for Michelangelo's famous painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel at the Vatican.
"The reason I'm offering that money to the pope and the Vatican is so they can redistribute the wealth that begins in the Vatican itself," Savage said.
Savage said he was making a point that there is vast wealth within the Catholic Church, including priceless works of art and major shares in global companies. Gold ingots could be sold for redistribution purposes, Savage said.
Francis on Friday told a group of U.N. delegates, including Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, that they should urge world governments to back "the legitimate redistribution of economic benefits by the state, as well as indispensable cooperation between the private sector and civil society."
Savage's response: "It's Karl Marx in a papal outfit."
He noted that Francis is from Argentina, home to liberation theology along with much of Latin America, in the 1960s and '70s. And although Francis himself never practiced liberation theology, "he was certainly shaped by it," Savage said.

And then what? What happens after all the money raised from the sold goods is then used? Does that eliminate all the hunger, all the poverty in the world?
No my friends...the poor will still be there. Poverty and squalor will still be there. As someone suggested in a recent column, "what if some Islamic group--under an anonymous front--buys Michaelangelo's Pieta, and then promptly smashes it to bits?"
Sure, they'll buy it for a relatively paltry sum, 50 million, 100 million...blood money from who knows what venture, but then where will be? A priceless work of art, reduced to bits.
By far the most pleasant, safe, and enjoyable places ended up being the ones where religion/church is considered dead. Or is it?
There are going to be whole lot of religious folks wondering why they are shut out of the World to Come, while their "unbelieving" neighbors are ushered in. Could it be that there are "unbelievers" who conduct their lives according to the Golden Rule - having an unnamed yet deep-seated knowledge and respect of God's laws - while certain religious folks continue to act unrighteously by nature and habit, convinced that they are off the hook?
The modern world enables covetousness so that its members may scoop from that pot of gold with seeming impunity. All those hands serve to validate the deception.
OOPS! The HEADLINE referenced income; Savage did reference wealth. Mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa!
It wasn't PRICELESS, or no price could have bought it. < /picky picky >
“That Savage should not criticize until he has all the information.”
He was responding to the very widespread media reports of the pope’s words. He had every right to discuss the news and criticize as fiercely as he wishes.
When someone uses the word “should”, it implies there is an authority that regulates his action or inaction. There is no such authority.
Don’t should on others.
I’m glad we agree on the deplorable message of the pope.
Not sure what you mean by ‘calling him out’. It sounds like you’re trying to turn the tables and imply that I’m guilty of the same errors as I say Michael Savage is.
Nice try but no sale.
If Mike really cares about not encouraging leftism, he could start at home and maybe not endorse leftists for California state office.
Yeah, that Mother Theresa, always demanding those lepers pay up.
Oddly, even with all that research, the one person that still doesn’t really understand “subsidiary” is you.
When forcibly done through government; it is Marxism and is wicked.
I like to think we are a Christian nation, including government.
Rather than admit you have “shoulded” all over us, you flee?
“should” someone do that???
Truth is now catholic bashing? You need thicker skin or learn how to properly defend your faith. Either way, not my problem.
The Vatican can get creative when it comes to moneymaking. They can host an upcoming WrestleMania, for example.
She was the exception. Obviously you’ve never dealt with the organization catholic charities, which I directly named. Shame on you for trying to divert attention using mother Theresa. If that’s the best you got, stop trying to defend the catholic faith, you’re doing a miserable job of it.
If I had posted vitriolic threads to you, I would consider it. Or is it a post that merely disagrees with you now vitriolic?
No, I’m saying that Savage is doing the same thing you’re doing. He’s not in error. You’re trying to say he’s being a hypocrite for saying the Pope should sell the Church’s stuff, when Savage doesn’t. He was saying the Pope is being hypocritical for telling other people to sell their stuff when the Church doesn’t so that.
Savage is one of the better talk-show radio hosts, I’ve been listening to him for about 15-20 years and watched him on MSNBC; he does respect the RCC and I think he’s just as gullible & guilty as Rush and the others in that they react to what the MSM says instead of listening to and reading what the pope actually says.
I encourage any interested party to read the entire statement, which is short, in its full context.
I think one may find it a bit different that what it has been represented to be.

Subsidiarity is an organizing principle that matters ought to be handled by the smallest, lowest or least centralized competent authority. Political decisions should be taken at a local level if possible, rather than by a central authority.[1]
