The Republic can survive a Barack Obama. It is less likely to survive a multitude of Idiots such as those who made him their president.”

Exactly.

In the long run, Putin will screw himself. For the Keynesian value of “the long run”.

~Russia got many of their supplies and armaments from .... wait for it .... the United States~

Allies supplied under 10% of materiel and equipment used by the Soviets which is actually huge but nowhere near critical.
Massive Allied bombing campaign against German industries was more important for the Russians but it wasn’t critical as well because Soviets outproduced Germans in every department anyway. Their economy was larger and it was all guns and to butter.
If not for the Allied involvement Soviets could have been in Berlin in say late 1946.
A result of operation Barbarosa was clear in December 1941 to any thinking strategist. And in earlier 1943 everyone but Hitler and his toadies knew that Red Army would be there sooner than later.
I think an idea behind D-Day was not that much to defeat Germany, but to deter Stalin from expanding his buffer zone into W Europe (France was more leftist than Czechoslovakia at the time and was an easy pick for Communists).

~They treated prisoners and civilians far worse, in the main, than either the Axis or Allied powers ever did. If you want proof, read any detailed history of that period.~

That might be a reason why more than third of Soviet military casualties are POWs industrially killed in a Nazi death camps. And who killed these 22 million Soviet civilians? Germans has killed about 25% of population of Belarus and decimated Ukraine, including almost every Jew they could find.

Soviets has never come close. If they did, there wouldn’t be any Germans left at all. Yes, Soviets were brutal to SS and Einsatzgruppen personnel but not to the rest of POWs. There are numerous stories of Soviets sharing their rations with the captured enemies. As for German warcrimes they are well documented.

Exactly, the title and first two paragraphs are meant to bolster the liberal/progressive sensative world view of Czar Obama the Impoverisher. The rest of the article hardly supports the rhetoric, but then who’s reading it...you’ll probably stop reading around the sixth or seventh paragraph, if that.

We could have bested the Axis without the USSR, although it would have been much more costly and hard-fought.

Having studied the war between Nazi Germany and the USSR most of my adult life, it wasn't quite that simple. And I would point out that the Soviets felt the same way about our participation.

Very few people in the West know the guy who actually won the war for the Soviet Union; Marshal Boris Shaposhnikov, who developed the Red Army mobilization plans. It was his work that allowed the Stalin to create fresh armies on the fly more rapidly than the Germans could destroy them. And all the while, even though those armies were destroyed in the meatgrinder, they wore down the Germans who could not replace their losses.

Yes, Stalin's brutality and incompetence cost a lot of lives in that war. Most of that was because of the condition he put the Red Army on June 22, 1941, with the officer purges, the rapid expansion of the force structure, the obsolete worn out equipment and occupation of unfortified and unfriendly areas. Because of that the Red Army was going to have to learn its craft in the field, and those lessons were going to be expensive. It was never going to be a rapier like the German panzer units, but instead, by necessity, it was a club used to bludgeon the Wehrmacht into submission. By 1943, Stalin found the generals who knew how to swing the club.

Could we have defeated the Axis in Europe without the USSR? Maybe. Over the course of two wars and two generations at the cost of copious amounts of American blood. The German war machine was in decline by June 6, 1944. We had complete air and naval superiority. And yet, Normandy was not a cakewalk.

I have a legitimate point but look as the rates from 20 years ago to bring things into perspective.
Also note that America considered a moral compass and in Russia ‘liberation of women’ and abortion was pushed since 90 years ago before the pill ever discovered.

The difference is Russia is starting to crack down on abortions, but making them illegal after the 12th week, and recently outlawing all abortion advertising.

Meanwhile the liberals in our country are pushing to always post birth abortions, and are actively pushing abortion worldwide, and even going to far as to make foreign aid conditional on a country embracing abortion.

The difference between us and Russia on this matter is night and day.

<><><><

So does that mean that Russia is only having twice the number of abortions per capita than their previous three times the rate of the US?

Have you ever seen the president of the US lift a young boy’s shirt (a stranger to him) and then kiss the boy on the stomach? There is video of Putin doing this.

What would you call a man who does this? Would you permit it to happen to your son?

say what you will but Russia is moving in the right direction, while we are sprinting in the wrong direction.

And the difference when it comes to sodomites is pretty stark also.

Invading your neighbor and killing a whole bunch of them isn’t “moving in the right direction”.

huh? invading their neighbor? what are you talking about?

If you are speaking of Ukraine, then surely you must be speaking about the terrorist thugs that overthrew the democratically elected government in Kiev. And I don't know if backing the deposed democratically elected government, urging local elections to determine the real will of the people, and opposing the thugs/terrorists that have taken over Kiev exactly qualifies as “Invading your neighbor and killing a whole bunch of them”

I must have missed that news flash.

I’m impressed that you freely admit sticking your fingers in your ears so as not to hear, and covering your eyes so as not to see.

Let me guess, everything you know about Russia is through her media.

You know what we freepers call people like that here in the states?

Low information voters.

fact: the former president of the Ukraine was elected in a free and fair election.

fact: rioters/protesters/terrorists (take your pick) overthrew the democratically elected government and seized control of the capital of Kiev and in the process ousted the democratically elected president.

do you dispute these facts?

and if not.

Since when does the US (or any free country for that matter) support the violent overthrow of a democratically elected government?

and if you answer “whenever such a government uses deadly force against its own citizens” then you surely must support the overthrow of those who overthrew the former government since THEY are now using deadly force to crush protesters.

So?

So your admiration for Putin personally, and your love of Mother Russia is all the justfication needed for Russia to come in and start picking the country apart?

At least you’re honest.

P. J. O’Rourke writes for Daily Beast?!? Wow.
So the international sanctions aren’t working—don’t worry! If 1,000 years of Russian screw-ups are anything to go by, it won’t be long before Vladimir Putin brings himself down. Now that we’ve failed to use Russia’s corrupt and degenerating economy, subservience to the international banking system, and vulnerability to falling energy prices to pop Vladimir Putin like a zit, we’re going to have sit on our NATO, E.U., and OSCE duffs and take the long view of Russian imperialism.
:') Thanks SeekAndFind.
