It is the real lesson of Watergate.
As South Carolinas Congressman Trey Gowdy, the new chairman of the House Select Committee on Benghazi, begins his task, it is worth recalling a lesson from Watergate. Specifically a lesson about the creation of what became known as the Senate Watergate Committee and how the Senate Republicans of 1973 lost a fight that literally changed the course of American history.
The date is November 17, 1972. The Democrats in the United States Senate are not happy with the results of the just concluded presidential election in which their nominee and Senate colleague, South Dakotas Senator George McGovern, had lost 49 states all but Massachusetts and the District of Columbia to President Richard Nixon.
In the middle of the campaign back in June the headquarters of the Democratic National Committee had been burglarized. Among other things, the objective was to bug the phones to monitor the DNC Chairman, ex-JFK and LBJ White House aide Lawrence OBrien. The story had been a detail of the campaign, but a small one. Not until October had the story gained any kind of traction, moving in a bigger way from print media and the hands of the Washington Posts young reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein to television. Walter Cronkite at CBS had spent two nights in a row on the scandal, a big deal in a day where the three TV networks only had a single half-hour news show at the dinner hour. There were strands of a story a connection between Nixons re-election committee, the story of an intelligence fund at the committee. And not much else. The news reports had no effect whatsoever on Nixons impending landslide victory.

Here’s the real lesson of Watergate:
In 1972, Richard Nixon got 520 electoral votes and 60.7% of the popular votes. Despite this enormous victory, the Democrats determined to get rid of him and overturn the results of the election.
From that moment, everything they said, everything they did, was focused like a laser on their desired result. They knew what they were doing, they did it, and they won.

Good article...
“Every single e-mail involved in this episode must be placed in the hands of Gowdys committee. Every relevant person involved from high to low should find themselves sitting at that witness table. America can spend the summer getting to know not only what Hillary Clinton did and where the President was and what he was doing exactly. The country can learn just who is Tom Donilon, anyway? Who is Ben Rhodes? Probe the Dudes memory and go over the scribblings of Tommy Vietor. Find every secretary, every night watchman. Be as thorough in investigating Obama as those Senate Democrats and, yes, the Republicans were in investigating Richard Nixon. Just follow the facts.”
Great and timely find! Thanks!
I never knew this history, LBJ bugged Nixon via the FBI? And in ‘64, bugged Goldwater. Bookmarked.
Great article. Did not know about the Dems using the FBI to bug the 1964 and 1968 GOP campaigns.
Shame on Hoover for not telling LBJ to take a hike.
I could never understand why the Dems made such a big deal about a political burglary, but it was to destroy Nixon.
Nixon had successfully fought the Communists, especially the traitor Alger Hiss. The Dems, who have been Commies themselves for many years, had it in for them ever since Hiss was convicted in 1949-1950.
The book “Witness” by Whittaker Chambers details those years and how many Commies the Soviets had in DC in the Federal government starting in the mid 1930s. Many of these, Hiss included, became influential, and set the stage for the Cold War from 1946-1991.
The Dems are true enemies of America. This election MUST put them back into minority status.
Our future depends on it.
Excellent article, well worth reading. Thanks.
The 1960 election should have been thoroughly investigated as well...What did the Mob do, and when did they do it? ;)
Good article.
I thought of that too. We have a risk of the Rats rewriting history. Already have, I know that.
In fact, via my last post, I was reading up on Lee Harvey Oswald, impoverished he was, he took Marina to a maternity ward in New Orleans to give birth to one of their daughters. Oswald left, so he wouldn’t have to pay and said something like “The President’s father bought him the presidency and we can’t even afford to have a baby”. Oswald left the ward so to avoid paying and I guess the State or Charity would handle it.
I can see in 2050 somebody writing the same thing about Obama.....I hope that we improve over time but I don’t have much faith in that we will.
It's true.
I had a close friend, now passed, who was in the Oval Office when LBJ received a message stating that a Republican operative whose phone had been bugged (and knew it) had told a caller that he couldn't respond because his phone was bugged -- however, he was on his way to the airport and would call en route.
LBJ immediately phoned somebody at the FBI and instructed them to bug every phone booth between the RNC and Dulles (the airport where the Republican was headed). The phone booths at Dulles were already bugged...
Watergate was about one of Nixon’s staffers trying to get risqué pictures of his wife from the Democrats’ escort service. It was still in court a few years ago. Maybe it still is.
I had never heard that history re LBJ, but it sure fits.
In time, the second shoe will drop. The Administration will announce that they will not cooperate with the Committee and will refuse to respond to its subpoenas.
All of us should be aware that the Democrats will adopt a total stonewall as their defense.
Presumably, Gowdy (and Boehner) are aware of this possible course. What will be their reaction to it? What do you think it should be?
What are the possibilities? I’m sure they will do what they can do.
Boehner’s a doormat just as much as Trey Gowdy is a bulldog.
Trey will declare, “Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!!” while Boehner is crying & applying tanning cream.
Gowdy’s a Cinncinatus; he doesn’t regard a Congressional career as the highest of all goals, unlike the tanned Ohioan. If the GOP-E backstabs him, he’ll come back to South Carolina; we here have much that he can do for the cause of liberty.
