DOTSERO, Colo. - A state trooper was rushed to the hospital after he was shot while helping a driver who was stopped on the side of Interstate 70 near Dotsero.
The Colorado State Patrol identified the trooper as Eugene Hofacker, a 6-year veteran, who is listed in critical but stable condition at Valley View Hospital in Glenwood Springs. Hofacker is assigned to the Vail Troop Office.
Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario said the trooper was shot as he approached the driver-side window of the suspect's car. A second trooper returned fire and killed the suspect.

the dead man is Thomas Ornelas, 41, who has a long criminal history that dates back to a murder he committed as a teenager. His history also includes several parole violations, repeated violations of a protection order, resisting arrest and attempted murder.
Ornelas has six other aliases listed on his record with the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. One of the aliases includes the first name, "Sick."
He was awaiting trial on attempted murder and other charges in Mesa County in September.
Ornelas' criminal record begins in 1991, when he was still 17. The CBI record shows the teenager was convicted as an adult of homicide and sent to the Territorial Correctional Facility in Canon City.

Well, he'll kill no one again! Prayers for the trooper.
That’s why the death penalty is so effective .... there are no repeat offenders .... should have fried him at 17 yrs old.
Maybe the many cop haters here at FR will chime in with “is the dog OK?” or “what, did the donut shop refuse his credit card?” or “couldn’t he have picked on someone his own size?”
Catch and release does not work for future victims ; repeat felons like liberal judges / laws and weak parole boards.
Who was the liberal who set him free?
...and out on bail???
I think a lot of Freepers, including myself, were once staunch defenders of the police. But that was some time ago when police behaved considerably better. If you don't think that many police are currently acting in a more belligerent and militaristic fashion, then you are not paying attention. Freepers don't 'hate' police. They hate jackbboots and power trip gestapo techniques that are increasingly being employed.
yup.
if we executed every murderous felon quicky like in old times, i’d be more for letting those that did their entire sentences have gun rights back.
I agree. I thought about making a very similar response to GSC but then thought, "Why bother? People like him/her, are going to believe what they want - just like a progressive."
I hope the trooper makes a full recovery. I wonder if that is the same hospital that “Doc Holiday” went to?
GSC, I’m interested in your response to what Right Brother said, as his views mirror my own.
All the more reason for the death penalty.
Here's a new one, "Dead."
Yea, no repeat offenders, and this Trooper would still be alive.
Way to go liberals!
No Kidding! I’ve come across a few of them myself recently....quite a diversity of opinion here!
Great reply. I wish I could say it that well. Where I live in N.J. Barney barely needs a bullet but all seven cops of which 3 are part time have all the bells & whistles. And our citizens are still better armed than the cops are.
I concur with what Right Brother wrote on post #9. The police today are not the LEOs that I grew up with and once admired. They are becoming increasingly militarized and their ranks are polluted with men (it’s usually men) with out-sized egos and the desire to control—rather than protect—the citizenry.
You can like them if you wish. I don’t.
