Georgia elderly man decapitated, wife missing; police seek clues
CNN ^ | 5/8/2014 | CNN

The Georgia couple is described as "sweet as can be," and authorities are scrambling to unravel the mystery of how Russell Dermond, 88, was killed and then reportedly decapitated, and his 87-year-old wife disappeared.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office is treating Shirley Dermond's disappearance from the Eatonton home -- where her husband was found dead Tuesday -- as an abduction, Sheriff Howard Sills said in a statement.

Police suspect that Russell Dermond was killed between Friday and Sunday.

The Dermonds' friends hadn't heard from them in days and went to their home in the upscale, gated, lakeside Great Waters community, where they found in the garage "what we are virtually certain is the body of 88-year-old Russell Dermond," Sills said.

Even a small yappy dog can warn you of an unknown stranger in your house or yard.

Not true. The problem with yappy dogs is that they always bark - about everything or nothing. The constant barking doesn't signify anything except that the dog likes to bark.

The drug cartels do a brisk business in decapitations.

That is not what I am talking about. My little blind dog barks when a car pulls into my driveway before the other dogs hear anything. Hootie sounds the alarm.

He doesn't bark at nothing, he barks at something, first.

Maybe your dog does, but my neighbor's yappers bark almost continuously from the moment she puts them out until she brings them in. Just last Tuesday I timed 2 hours and 20 minutes of continuous barking from a little before 8:00PM until just after 10:00PM. I assumed that she prought them in. They then performed for about 40 minutes from just after 11:00PM. last night continuous barking from about 7:40 unil a bit after 9:00

Continuous noise doesn't alert anyone to anything.

Mine don't do that, in fact I have never had a dog, big or small that barked constantly. I have had at least 10 JRT’s in the last 20 years and none of them did that.

Have you said anything to your neighbor?

My next door neighbors have 2 English Mastiffs, close to 400 pounds of dog flesh. The dogs were both in the house when burglars broke into the master bedroom and stole jewelry. They had to know the dogs were there and were not deterred

This is a gated, well patrolled, very rich community. This is an incredibly shocking incident for this area.

Have you said anything to your neighbor?

On more than one occasion. She apologizes for the noise, puts them in the house and they stop barking, and then she lets them out again 30 minutes later when the barking starts all over again.

I have never had a dog, big or small that barked constantly.

You obviously never had schnauzers. The neighbor has had as many as 4, but I suspect someone turned her in to the county (max three dogs without a kennel license) She usually has three, but sometimes only two. I keep a log so that if my wife agrees I'll turn her in to the county for harboring public nuisance animals. However, my wife doesn't want to "start trouble with the neighbor." I'd say that the neighbor has already sted trouble.

No schnauzers but I have had dozens of dogs in my long life. Hope to have many more. Mine are always house dogs, even the big ones like Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

I tell my neighbors, if you hear my dogs barking outside then I am at home, because if I am not at home, my dogs are inside the house.

Exactly! My closest neighbor has 3 outdoor dogs who barked continually all night until I finally got fed up enough to politely notify him that his dogs were keeping my wife and I awake for hours every night. He now keeps them shut up in his basement for most of the night, but even so they still begin barking again at 7 AM when he lets them out.

My point is that those dogs couldn't possibly bark any louder or sound any more fierce even if his home was being invaded by a car load of criminal intruders.

Sounds like a revenge murder. The Desmonds had a son that was murdered back in 2000 while buying drugs in Atlanta, a suspect was convicted and is still serving time. Could there be a connection?

22LR should do the job.

Many things would do the job from a .22 to a bit of arsenic. Unfortunately the penalties for offing a dog are almost as bad as offing a person, and it would be fairly obvious that only the neighbors would be motivated to terminate her vile animals.
