Let’s put it slightly differently to account for nuances on the ground:
ANY support sent to Syria is co-opted into Al Qaeda. Al Qaeda and other allied Islamists are the core of Assad’s opponents. They can control essentially everything outside of Assad’s patch.
Recognizing (or sending arms to) any of Assad’s opponents supports Al Qaeda indirectly, and KNOWINGLY.
That’s my take on it.
