~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada

Nellis Air Force Base is a United States Air Force base, in Clark County, Nevada, on the northeast side of Las Vegas. An installation of the Air Combat Command (ACC), Nellis is the location of United States Air Force Warfare Center and a major training location for both U.S. and foreign fighter aircraft aircrews.

The base is named for William Harrell Nellis, a Las Vegas resident and Air Force P-47 pilot who died in action during the Battle of the Bulge.

Nellis, an integral part of the United States Air Force’s Air Combat Command, is known as the “Home of the Fighter Pilot.” It is the pinnacle of advanced air combat aviation training.

The base’s all-encompassing mission is accomplished through an array of aircraft: A-10; F-15C; F-15E; F-22A; F-16; RQ-1A and MQ-1 Predator remotely piloted aircraft; and HH-60G helicopters. Nellis’ work force of approximately 12,000 military and civilian people makes it one of the largest single employers in southern Nevada.

Nellis Air Force Base, Nev., is one of the largest fighter bases in the world. Aircraft from Nellis operate on the Nevada Test and Training Range, which offers more than 15,000 square miles of airspace and 4,700 square miles of restricted land.

More than 75 percent of all live munitions used by the Air Force for training are dropped on the Nevada Test and Training Range. Many communities in southern Nevada see and hear Nellis aircraft 24 hours a day, seven days a week. From 100 feet above the ground to twice the speed of sound, Nellis conducts advanced combat training, performs operational test and evaluation, and develops tactics.

Learn More About Nellis Air Force Base Here!

The U.S. Air Force Demonstration Team, The Thunderbirds, is located at Nellis Air Force Base.

The 3600th Air Demonstration Team was declared operational on June 1, 1953, although the team itself had been together and practicing for about 6 weeks prior. At this time the team had no name. There already were the Sky-Blazers, Blue Angels, Acrojets, and now the 3600th Air Demonstration Team? This just wouldn't do. During June 1953, a contest was held at Luke AFB, home of the 3600th, to pick a name for the new team. The name chosen was "Thunderbirds".

Good morning Pro ((HUGS))

Yup, I’m getting ready to go for a walk this morning. Hope to get back into a routine at home as well.

We’re in for a partly sunny day, not too hot yet.

My hope is one day the poor folks will be rich and will resent the government taking their money to help the poor. Oh wait, that’ll never happen...we’ll only have more poor as the middle class is taxed into poverty.

Enough of the depressing junk, get out and enjoy the “Itsnotmonday” day!

YUCK!

Good morning night owl ((HUGS))

I think someone stole our good morning ritual. I saw a bank commercial that said something like “we are night owls and early birds...” Should we sue? hehe

Went out there yesterday. Had a great time. Did some grass cutting with the lawnmower and weed-eater yesterday.

Watching for fires today. Red Flag Warning for Western Oklahoma today.

I am very proud to say that I was born in the post hospital on Nellis on March 19, 1944. My father was a Lt. in the Army Ord Corp. and was a tail gunner instructor at the time. When I was 9 weeks old my mother and I returned to Okla. to her parents house and my Dad was attached to the 3rd Marines to serve as an Army Air Force detachment on the assault on Iwo Jima.

Went fishing this AM and caught five more crappie. Just as I was finishing cleaning them, I saw our neighbor finishing her walk. I stopped her and gave her the filets.

Its 93 here...not much better than the 98 from yesterday. It’s supposed to gradually cool off. So I look forward to that!

I hope you saved me some of that tidy little morsel - I still have a little room after dinner.
