I saw her in San Diego a few years ago. The Canadians have an interesting pronunciation of the name Regina. It rhymes with the female “v” word.

Indeed. It threw me a bit when I first heard a Canadian student say it.

The Canadian pronunciation of the ship's name is the correct one. The ship was not named for anybody's girlfriend, it was named after the City of Regina, Saskatchewan.

HMCS Regina is a Halifax class frigate, all of whom are named after Canadian cities.

Regina is another way of saying Queen. The reigning monarch at the time of the founding of the municipality was Queen Victoria. She was formally styled Victoria Regina. The City was named Regina in her honour.

The Present monarch is Queen Elizabeth the second, styled Elizabeth II Regina or sometimes simply as Elizabeth Regina. A king is styled "Rex". Our previous monarch was George VI, styled George VI Rex.
