Saying President Barack Obama hasnt been tough enough on Russia, a high-powered group of Republican senators introduced legislation on Wednesday aimed at imposing new sanctions on Moscow over its actions in Ukraine.
Rather than react to events as they unfold, which has been the policy of this administration, we need to inflict more direct consequences on Russia prior to Vladimir Putin taking additional steps that will be very difficult to undo, said Bob Corker of Tennessee, the top GOP member of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, who drafted the measure.
The congressional push for a harder line on Russia comes with Obama set to welcome German Chancellor Angela Merkel, one of his key partners on Ukraine, to the White House on Friday.

As above, so below. As before, yet again.
“what about every other country on Africa doing the same thing?”
There is no compelling national interest in Africa, except for ensuring chromium stores are accessible.
“What about South America? Why ignore them?”
I don’t see a compelling national interest there.
“Why Ignore the half of the middle east we haven tried to world build yet?”
Nation building is generally a folly and specifically a disaster in most muslim nations. The only interest we have their is to ensure the free flow of oil through the Straits and to ensure that Iran does not get nuclear weapons.
“Isolationism is not the act of minding ones own international business.”
It is the act of withdrawing entirely from the world, specifically, when vital US interests are at stake. Russia confronts us at every turn, whenever they can, even while weakened. They are an historical enemy and further, they relish the role. It is in our interest to impede them and contain them.
“The US getting involved in a shooting match in Eastern Europe will cause nothing but misery and hellish waste of human lives.”
Nobody is advocating the US being involved in a war. Russia has already started a war in Ukraine, however. We can make them pay a heavy price, economically.
Your defense of total isolationism is the same refrain we heard when Germany annexed Sudetenland and other areas by deception and force.
And where did the appeasing lead us to? A World War.
We have them too.
So what? Even Putin is not that stupid, he has too many personal billions he enjoys.
The USSR had them when they fell apart as well.
They must be joking?
You just trashed your whole argument. You say there is no NA in Africa then give one.
you say there is no NA in south America as tens of thousands of their people fleeing communism there pass through Mex and come here illegally.
you call nation building a folly (rightly) then continue to argue for nation building in the Ukraine.
Oil flow there matters to Europe. Not to us. We are awash in oil. We just are denied it by dems using it as an excuse to go to war with Russia.
Where exactly has Russia confronted us at ANY time? We go to them hat in hand often asking their permission to do all kinds of things in that hemisphere. If they tell us to FOAD, that isn’t a confrontation THEY initiated.
Do you want Aztlan separatists getting Russian training arms and training? Before we start playing in their front yard, we had better be mindful of our own.
I’m not repeating anything. I don’t know a number of Nazis, Nazi supporters and simphatizers in Ukraine but it is clear these people are present.
Not to mention they are overrepresented within current Ukrainian government.
To bring things into perspective, Bolshevics had some 3% supporters in Russia in 1917 but they had guns and were extremely active to make their way.
Morons. bathhouse barry owns it. Get a brain.
I work on nukes in the AF when Reagan was President.
Talk about fun times.
“You just trashed your whole argument. You say there is no NA in Africa then give one.”
Those stores of chromium are secure. So, it is a stable free market. No national interest, unless that situation would change.
“you say there is no NA in south America as tens of thousands of their people fleeing communism there pass through Mex and come here illegally.”
That is a domestic issue that I’m sure we agree on. We could stop the flow if we wanted to, from our side of the fence. The elites in both Parties do not wish to. It is not a foreign policy issue, though.
“you call nation building a folly (rightly) then continue to argue for nation building in the Ukraine.”
I don’t think you will find me arguing for nation building. Financial aid is not nation building. Nation building implies a comprehensive and hands on approach. We give little to Ukraine.
“Where exactly has Russia confronted us at ANY time?”
Giving BMD to our allies, provocations to artificially inflate the price of energy worldwide. Alliances to oppose the US. Cuba, Venezuela, N.Korea, Syria, Iran, to name a recent few. Espionage, spying, subversion. Consistently agrees to treaties and then violates them. etc. etc.
Strap on your gear and go show them ruskies what’s what. Meanwhile, the tire burners in Kiev and their buddies in the White House appreciate your support.
Your simple faith and trust in the enemy combatant in Mordor on the Potomac and his band of commie/moslem/racist/faggot loving revolutionaries would be touching if it weren’t so stupidly dangerous.
The worst enemy of the USA is the cabal that is pushing war. You think that 0bastard and his handlers, string pullers, policy makers, enablers and funders who tell him what to do and what to sign - should be the ones to get in a war? To make foreign policy decisions that are good for the US and the world?
I can’t believe it.
I would love to see one ‘secure’ inch of Africa with all the tribal/racial and religious upheaval. Nothing there is secure. Never was secure, never will be secure.
SA is absolutely a natsec issue. those illegals are wrecking this economy and there are plenty of terrorists among them. ICE even admits that.
FA is nation building otherwise what do they need the cash for? They are using it to do something on the national level as long as it is in accordance with what we want them to do. That is by definition nation building.
Last paragraph...You just described American foreign policy under obama. you realize that right?
We don’t owe Ukraine or their tire burners anything. Let me know if they try hitting on a NATO country. mccain thanks you for the support.
Sadly, that is the truth.
BTW I can’t wait for Arpaio’s/Zullo’s press conference.
It will be interesting. Extremely so, I am sure.
Obama doesn't care about Ukraine. His level of support is sending them food rations.
Obama only cares about arms or even military forces when the defense of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, in Libya and in Egypt are involved.
I don't know where some are getting the idea that Obama cares about Ukraine and is even willing to go to war with Ukraine.
Ukrainians defending their own country are of course not the same thing as Aztlan separatists invading our country and then breaking away from it.
Ironically, more similar to your example are a minority of Russians in E. Ukraine being supported by Russians against the will of the majority, trying to break away from Ukraine.
When you have 2 countries hostile and you send one food, is that not helping them against the other? Do you not think that creates the potential for war on the provider?
Because wars have begun over far less.
