Boehner’s Tantrum : His real gripe is with those pesky voters.
nat review ^ | 4/28/14

In his home district, Speaker John Boehner offered an explanation for why the House has not moved an immigration bill. “Here’s the attitude: ‘Ohhhh. Don’t make me do this. Ohhh. This is too hard.’” He continued: “We get elected to make choices. We get elected to solve problems and it’s remarkable to me how many of my colleagues just don’t want to. . . . They’ll take the path of least resistance.”

We do not doubt that some large number of Republican congressmen fit Boehner’s description. They agree in outline with the immigration bill that the Senate passed last year, which offered legal status to many illegal immigrants, created new guest-worker programs, and promised to tighten enforcement of the immigration laws to block new illegal entrants. They would like something along those lines to pass, but fear that voting for such a bill would anger some of their voters.

AdvertisementTo the extent Boehner is right, though, the system is working as it should: Fear of political repercussions is keeping congressmen from voting for unwise legislation. The Senate bill is too flawed to be the basis for useful legislation. By legalizing illegal immigrants before we are sure enforcement is working, it runs the risk of drawing in more illegal immigrants in the future. It dramatically and recklessly increases low-skilled immigration, which is bound to impede assimilation. Its guest-worker programs formalize rather than solve part of the problem of illegal immigration: They invite a large class of people to contribute their labor to the U.S. but not to participate as equals in our culture and politics.

He is no leader, but a political hack.

He needs retirement, now

He is no leader, but a political hack.

Political hacks do what the voters want, whereas a leader does what he personally wants. I wish Boehner were a political hack.

OK, solve the problem, get them off any federal programs and remove them from the country or have them voluntarily deport...problem solved.

This jackass should never have been reelected to the speakers job, he should relegated to speaking from his favorate bar stool while crying into his gin and tonic.

“whereas a leader does what he personally wants”

your definition is not of a leader but of a dictator.

A leader has people following him due to his vision and charisma. Boehner has neither.

He follow political whims he likes, or is a political hack.

No a$$wipe, you're in the House of Representatives and you're supposed to represent the interests of the people who (inexplicably) elected you. Why does anyone have to explain this?

I still struggle to understand by what political calculus the GOPe benefits from immigration "reform"?

Are they unaware that they are cutting their own throats?

I guess the Chamber of Commerce is offering so much $$ that they think they can personally survive-- the hell w/ us.

They’ll take the path of least resistance.

How ironic. The path of least resistance is to provide amnesty to lawbreakers.

RE “Ohhhh. Don’t make me do this. Ohhh. This is too hard.’”

I swear Mark Levin was doing that exact same line last year in ridiculing the GOP in congress for being hesitant to shutdown the government to stop Obama-care, cut spending, etc,

Its like Bohner heard it and now is throwing it back.

In fact I first heard this last week played on Levin's show.

“We get elected to make choices.”

No, John—you get elected to represent the people who voted for you and THEIR wishes—not yours. Perhaps, “We the People” mean nothing to many politicians, but it DOES mean something to many of us and we DO have the power to elect those who will represent us.

Boehner's cartoonish whine notwithstanding----fear of political repercussions is keeping OUR REPRESENTATIVES from voting for this unwise legislation.

The Senate bill is dangerously flawed, and its glaring ommissions WRT the securing of US ntl security, cannot ever serve as the basis for useful legislation.

By legalizing illegal aliens w/out shoring up law enforcement, we hand an engraved invitation to global Third Worlders----all of 'em salivating to ride the US gravy train.....each seperatist group conniving w/ a hidden agenda.

Amnesty recklessly opens the door wide for illiterate, low-skilled aliens born and bred in savage cultures, here only to suck up US benefits and take jobs away from Americans.

Third Worlders may, in fact, contribute their labor to the US but their loyalties are elsewhere----they have no intention of becoming Americanized....of participating as equals in American culture, our vast history, or preserving American values.

The amnesty bill amply demonstrates that this separatist population intends to usurp the US political system to advance their own hidden agenda.

“we DO have the power to elect those who will represent us.”

**********
In theory yes, but in practice not so much. Most politicians are crafy and deceitful (their only real skill) and know how to manipulate the masses into voting for them. And there is no shortage in this country of gullible and ignorant people.

They are basically a bunch of carnival barkers and snake oil salesmen and we keep buying tickets to the same old show. In this regard, the GOP is particularly good at exploiting the nativete of its base.
