Schools across America will only be able to sell low-calorie healthy food, the Department of Agriculture announces.
The US is banning junk food in schools in an effort to cut the level of obesity in young people.
The ban by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) will start on July 1 and will be nationwide.
According to the proposed ban, schools across the country will only be allowed to sell healthy foods such as fruit, dairy products, whole-grain foods, lean protein products and vegetables.
The staple food of a meal must not exceed 350 calories and snacks must be less than 200 calories.
All food sold in schools should not contain more than 35% sugar or trans fat - a type of artificial fat linked to coronary heart disease.
The ban will affect 100,000 schools across the country. In the past, only the states of California and Connecticut had similar rules prohibiting carbonated soft drinks and junk food.
The USDA defines junk food as being foods with a high calorie count and minimal nutritional value, such as candy, chips and french fries, according to nutrition expert Katherine Tallmadge
Parents warned the policy may prove unpopular with children, while some feel the rules go too far by banning all drinks over a certain size....

Already been banned from schools because the parents aren't certified food preparers and the kitchens haven't been inspected.

It has the power as long as Moochelle is dictating what our youth shall eat.
The states have never delgated to the feds, via the Constitution, the specific power to regulate either intrastate commerce or any aspect of public school policy. Here's evidence of that concerning intrastate commerce.
State inspection laws, health laws, and laws for regulating the internal commerce of a State, and those which respect turnpike roads, ferries, &c. are not within the power granted to Congress. [emphases added] Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
So funny. If you want to see junk food, just peruse the actual implemented menus approved by the Dept. of Ag. The term “junk food” also includes the inedible crap promoted by the Dept. of Ag.
In NY, the "Supreme Court" is the lowest level court. The Appellate Divisions are above it, and the Court of Appeals is the highest level. Just to keep ya guessing. ;)
Unfortunately, they are accepting federal funds for school lunches and agree to certain "strings" that come with the $$$.
I don't like it, and don't think it should be happening, but alas, it is.
Now if we could just get USDA to put the same stringent restrictions on those receiving SNAP (food stamps) funds s they are putting on children in schools.............
That’s a great idea. It has a number of benefits:
* Healthy food mandates per SNAP would alter the current demographic trend that links poverty to obesity.
* Far fewer people would be able to sell SNAP cards / “I’ll shop your list if you pay me cash for it”.
* If you want Little Debbie and Red Bull, you have to get a job. As a result, far more people would get a job to earn money to pay for the food they want.
Thanks for that note Gabz. The problem is that the Supreme Court has historically clarified that, since things like public schools are uniquely under 10th Amendment-protected state powers, Congress shouldn't even be laying taxes for public school purposes.
Congress is not empowered to tax for those purposes which are within the exclusive province of the States. Justice John Marshall, Gibbons v. Ogden, 1824.
In other words, Congress is arguably using state revenues to bribe the states to comply with federal policies which promote special-interest agendas imo. Corrupt Congress obtained such revenues by essentially stealing it from the states by means of constitutionally indefensible federal taxes.
Are we having fun yet?
This edict is mandated by the pus-gut poofters that run the U.S.D.A. ?
No, it does not. Just ignore it.
You are not going to get an argument from me on this issue.
First of all, the Federal government has no business being involved in k-12 education to begin with. If there was no federal level Dept. of mis-Education, there would be no involvement of the USDA in cafeteria food.
Already being done, a meal was confiscated as not nutritious enough.
Just because that big fat assed big fat first fat lady fatso has a big fat ass doesn’t mean children must be starved. She is the one that needs the diet. Not our children.
Wow! Say that three times fast.
The fda lib-idiots eat whatever they want...with their bloated salaries. Stop abusing our kids, you fascists!
I doubt very serious of there are actually dairy products. It’ll all be low fat and loaded with sugar.
