GOP Scrambles To Condemn Rancher's Remarks on Race

Republicans – including possible 2016 candidate Rand Paul -- are scrambling to distance themselves from defiant Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy after he made startling comments about slavery and African-Americans in a New York Times article published Wednesday night.

From the Times’ Adam Nagourney:

“I want to tell you one more thing I know about the Negro,” he said. Mr. Bundy recalled driving past a public-housing project in North Las Vegas, “and in front of that government house the door was usually open and the older people and the kids — and there is always at least a half a dozen people sitting on the porch — they didn’t have nothing to do. They didn’t have nothing for their kids to do. They didn’t have nothing for their young girls to do.

“And because they were basically on government subsidy, so now what do they do?” he asked. “They abort their young children, they put their young men in jail, because they never learned how to pick cotton. And I’ve often wondered, are they better off as slaves, picking cotton and having a family life and doing things, or are they better off under government subsidy? They didn’t get no more freedom. They got less freedom.”

Bundy had previously drawn support from some GOP lawmakers for his clash with the Bureau of Land Management.

[snip]

In statements after Bundy’s remarks, both Paul and Heller condemned his comments.

"His remarks on race are offensive and I wholeheartedly disagree with him,” said Paul.

And a spokesman for Heller told the Times that the senator “completely disagrees with Mr. Bundy’s appalling and racist statements, and condemns them in the most strenuous way.”

He used the word "Negro" -- still used in the NAACP title

Huh?

Forget it. He's on a roll.

(insert Germans bombing Pearl harbor reference)

State-controlled media in full-on character assassination mode. No one can be allowed to publicly stand up against FedGov hegemony.

Wonder what kind of character assassination they have planned down in Texas. Americans are so stupid as to believe that if you’ve made an “offensive” comment, that means you no longer have any rights.

I understand his point, and I've wondered the same thing. Government - especially the 'War on Poverty'- has destroyed the black family. But I would not have phrased it that way. No man is better off a slave.

They are still slaves. It's a harsh word, but maybe it needs to be said because this government is in the process of enslaving us all.

Bundy is a simple man, he is making his observations outside on the range.

Some people have no ideal how to react to people living an isolated existence that don’t feel like they have to conform to society.

Yeah, keep in mind these statements were supposedly made at a press conference last Saturday and yet we only hear about them now as something that was “overheard” by the NYT. Where are the RECORDINGS?

SATURDAY????

That s**t would be plastered all over the news 10 minutes later.

Yep, the American Propaganda Corps is making things up outright.

Again.

Larger font so people notice this.

“No man is better off a slave.”

Don’t look now, but isn’t that what were all becoming? The masters are the government.

In defense of Brundy, he grew up in the forties, fifties and sixties. He has led a more or less isolated life and doesn’t probably watch TV that much. I’m about his age, and black people used to be referred to as “Negroes” It was once “Colored People” too in my life time.

The way he speaks in no way makes him a raciest.

Yes they will demonize. NO DO NOT MAKE IT EASY.

It’s hearsay propaganda until proven otherwise. Produce a tape, and even then, it would be suspect until properly analyzed. Put NOTHING past the enemedia.

He is done with being an example for conservativism. However right he may (or may not) have been with his BLM fight, he is now damaged goods. A useful idiot for the left to say; “See? Another racist right winger who....”

Some have staying power and some don't. R2z

Who talks like that today...

A lot of people.

Regardless, the war over perceptions was just T-boned by a torpedo. Less will condemn than peel away quietly. Mr. Bundy is not a public relations expert, but he just poisoned the jury and allowed the Old New Left to make the issue of federal lands held in Nevada, Alaska and in the west generally "about race."

Logic has little to do with that perception, but wait and see what little time it takes for some Juan Williams or his wannabes to try to bend the argument around to "race," or "white privilege." All they then have to do is waste the air-time devoted to the BLM issue defending that sophistry.

Disastrous.

This is a whole nuther issue. These are his personal thoughts on something that has nothing to do with the ranch and the BLM issue.

What if we find out that Cliven doesn’t like the taste of broccoli?

Will that have an effect BLM issue?

They have devolved into a Propaganda Corps so thoroughly, that they now make things up outright — and as we see in the Dan Rather case, even falsify evidence.

They are making shit up.

If they are, Bundy should sue them for libel. If he does not, well...

Yup! SATURDAY. Here is the exact QUOTE from the NYT:

He said he would continue holding a daily news conference; on Saturday, it drew one reporter and one photographer, so Mr. Bundy used the time to officiate at what was in effect a town meeting with supporters, discussing, in a long, loping discourse, the prevalence of abortion, the abuses of welfare and his views on race.

So the statement was "overhead" by a NYT source last SATURDAY and we are just now hearing about it? Please not: NO RECORDINGS.

Suing them for libel is EXACTLY what they’d like. 1) More publicity generated to these comments. 2) The NYT has legions of lawyers waiting for just such an event. 3) Takes the focus off the issue.
