Denton(TX) ISD Makes Dramatic Grading Changes

DENTON (CBSDFW.COM) - The Denton Independent School District is throwing traditional grading methods right out the window, shifting to a new way of assessing their students. The change is going to happen for kids from 6th to 12th grade beginning next year. Teachers will still be handing out letter grades, but the means of calculating those scores will be different than just about any other school district in North Texas.

Hand in your homework late? You won’t get a zero.

Want a higher grade on a test? Just take it again. Grades will no longer be reduced for failure to meet deadlines. Zeroes will not be used for missing work. Students will be able to retake all exams and use the higher score. The idea is to hand out grades that show what the kids actually know, not how well they behave. “We are not dismissing the value of those behaviors,” stated Vicki Christenson, director of secondary curriculum.

“We’re simply separating them out and saying grades have to be all about learning, and not about behaviors that we value. We have to find another way to help kids build those behaviors.”

Why even make them come to school at all?

Congressional district is irrelevant. Schools are not accountable to the feds, but to the state, under local control. Burgess has no say.

Motive? Probably because they want the kids to learn the material, and sometimes you have to “try, try again.”

There are 120,000. People in Denton, less than 5000 vote in the mayor/council/school district elections. No organized group to oppose these people.

Doesn't help any at all that it's a two college town either.

I’ve always thought that Denton is a conservative area. I have family and friends there...all conservative including the young adults.

This seems like a lot more work for the teachers—not less.

Evil Progressive agents have infiltrated the schools across the US via the teaching colleges. Doesn’t matter how conservative the community is. All teachers are now trained to be mental health shills and to forward the socialist nihilist agenda. The school psychologist is only there to see that no one escapes the reservation. Act up and you get drugged. Unless the kid is a bully. Then he is simply an apprentice school psychologist.

When students know that their academic success is the goal, not obedience and subservience, they will probably find that students behave better too and even feel encouraged to work hard.

Unlike so many others that have commented on this thread, I’m in full agreement with your entire posting. ...The Denton ISD is trying to focus on what the students have learned, rather than on whether the students obey ridiculous rules.

My public schooling years were mostly in the ‘50s. I was suspended for a couple of days numerous times from the 8th through the 12th grade because I broke school rules. The grades I received were only based on my homework and tests; not my behavior. .....That is exactly what this ISD is doing through their changes.

Whatever floats your boat. Just as long as the kids think they’re smart, it doesn’t matter if they’re dumber than rocks. It’s the attitude that counts not the substance.

Public education. It’s free (from GOD) affirmative action government sponsored social experimentation and exploitation of the mostly ignorant masses of fatherless undisciplined heathen children of liberal parentage. /s

One size fits all. Your child had better conform to the lowest common denominator. To achieve beyond that would be unfair to the rest of the children who think they are just as smart as your child.

Get Smart! Get your children out of public schools, all the elite, most politicians, and a great number public school teachers and administrators have already.
