Mayor Bill de Blasio is pulling back the reins on his plans to quickly get rid of New York Citys horse-drawn carriage industry, stung by a recent outpouring of support for the colorful coaches that have clip-clopped their way through Central Park for more than 150 years.
A campaign pledge to take on the horses during his first week as mayor was eclipsed by other issues. [ ]
What changed? For one, a media blitz led by actor Liam Neeson has portrayed the horse-drawn carriage industry as an iconic, romantic part of New York that provides about 400 jobs, many to Irish immigrants. In a series of editorials and TV interviews, he has said the operators treat their 200 working horses like their own children. [ ]
The next blow came when a series of city unionswho usually are de Blasios staunchest alliesbroke with the mayor, urging him to reconsider his decision in order to save not only the industrys hundreds of jobs but a profitable source of tourism.

De Blasio’s real reason for wanting to get rid of the horses is that an aide told him that he was continually “stepping in it” so he figured getting rid of the horses would fix the problem.
“If you leave the front of my apartment now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.”
Of course, I'm sure you think that you personally don't have the President you deserve.
As long as they are the ones riding, it works for me!
This smells like an election pay off to some supporting mafia.
If DiBlasio were smart,he would propose using state and federal transportation dollars to build a multi-level, LEEDS Platinum, PeTA approved underground stable right in Central Park. That way he claims victory by getting the horses off the street, gets the kickback from his developer buddy for the former stable site, and makes the graft on the new construction. Win/win, baby!
Good.
So the nation's most bustling city is not fit for animals but it's OK for people?
If they want to get rid of something, get rid of the cars and keep the horses.
I think it is a direct payoff to the leftist donor who wants a sweetheart contract to supply the electric cars that Warren Wilhelm (he changed his name to Bill DiBlasio) intends to replace the horses with. That’s city, state, and federal money.
There is nothing NATURAL about that - it is taught/trained to the animals.
No, the Bible gave humans domination over all the animals, and using animals to help and guard humanity is part of Nature’s (God’s) Plan.
“Reason”, which is very Natural, was given to Man to use for prospering and utilizing Nature for survival and “happiness”-—which includes animals. The animals are not called “Beasts of Burden” for nothing. Just like using trees for houses and rocks for walls.....using Nature is NOT unnatural and it is “using the Mind” which is the most creative aspect of Man, which makes us in the “image of God” , which is to be used for “Virtue” (Excellence).
I think we should ask the horses.
BTW, I grew up with horses and used to stop and pet the horses of Central Park whenever I was passing by. They seemed perfectly happy to me.
They've got a job (a purpose to their lives), a place to stay, food in the trough...that's more than many Americans have.
IIRC, this is about the real estate in which the horses are stabled. De Blasio’s cronies want it for development.
I do not need a Bible lesson, I am fully aware of human domination over animals as God given. My point as a horse pulling a cart/wagon/buggy must be taught to the animal - thus it is not natural.
You try putting a bridle and yoke attached to a cart/wagon/buggy on a wild horse and tell me how you make out.
When properly trained/taught a horse will take to it - but it is not natural, as you will find out the first time you do it - especially if you have no experience having done it in the past.
Have you ever been around wild horses? They are a bit different than what you might think.
“DiBlastio was really feeling his oats....but now it looks like the union woke up and is trying to rein him in.
This Democrat ringer is really a mane-stream communist.
The sooner NYC voters take off their blinders and he gets whirlawayed, the better.
Throw him out on his Ascot!”
In other words, you are saying he is a horse’s ass.
There’s quite a difference between a wild mustang and a draft horse.
Yep. DeBlasio was going to profit like 0 did with the green energy *investments*. Good for Liam. Not a huge fan of his, but thought this was a worthwhile fight.
