Even as the crisis in Ukraine continues to defy easy resolution, President Obama and his national security team are looking beyond the immediate conflict to forge a new long-term approach to Russia that applies an updated version of the Cold War strategy of containment.
Just as the United States resolved in the aftermath of World War II to counter the Soviet Union and its global ambitions, Mr. Obama is focused on isolating President Vladimir V. Putins Russia by cutting off its economic and political ties to the outside world, limiting its expansionist ambitions in its own neighborhood and effectively making it a pariah state.
Mr. Obama has concluded that even if there is a resolution to the current standoff over Crimea and eastern Ukraine, he will never have a constructive relationship with Mr. Putin, aides said. As a result, Mr. Obama will spend his final two and a half years in office trying to minimize the disruption Mr. Putin can cause, preserve whatever marginal cooperation can be saved and otherwise ignore the master of the Kremlin in favor of other foreign policy areas where progress remains possible.

More like “Obama writes off strategizing”.
Its clear that Obama has no leadership skills. He can only be effective by DICTATING.
But he can only dictate if the other branches of government roll over.
And roll over they are.
This is what is meant by “learning on the job.”
Obama has to rediscover a 65 year-old cold-war policy when reality suddenly doesn’t match his fantasy world.
More like it’s the other way around.
He sure is not effective trying to dictate to Putin. The reverse has occurred, and several times in public; who knows how many times behind the scenes.
What was the quote? “The 1980’s called, they want their foreign policy back?” LOL
So why isn't our party opposing him.
Begs the question as to who is “our party”. As far as the GOP goes, Reagan was the last one that tried to de-RINO it.
The grim reality is that the power and the influence of the West is declining. The West became powerful, wealthy and dominant when as a result of the Enlightenment it embraced individual freedom and productive capitalism. Today the EU and the US is embracing the socialism and government controls that the rest of the world, having learned the tragic consequences, is abandoning. There is also decadence and a declining native birthrate. Power abhors a vacuum. Power is shifting toward Asia and Russia.
“Ignore him and maybe he’ll go away” is a heckuva foreign policy, Barry.
How childish. Alaska will be a part of Russia in that time.
This is assuming o can strategize anything besides an election campaign. In the past 6 years he’s shown no evidence.
Delusional. To pick and choose issues to address or ignore thinking one is not connected to the other is pure fantasy. Of course, we know the sky in Obama’s world is a different color.
Hey Barry, the 50s called. They want their foreign policy back.
I so wish that someone would taunt him with his own snarky line.
You and me both.
Yes but he is clean articulate and has a nice smile for a negro.
