The U.S. recorded the most deaths in its history and the fewest births since 1998, resulting in the lowest population gain from natural causes in 35 years, an analysis of 2013 Census Bureau estimates released Thursday shows.
Americans remain cautious about having babies following the worst recession since the Great Depression, although they are increasingly changing residences again, suggesting growing confidence in the economic recovery.
Those are among the findings from county-level data that also show the largest metropolitan areas are getting bigger as much of the rest of the nation sees slower population growth or declines. Rural areas where oil and natural gas production is booming and Gulf Coast retirement conclaves are notable exceptions to that trend.
“The recession’s influence on migration may be waning, but it continues to have a negative impact on births,” said Ken Johnson, a senior demographer with the University of New Hampshire’s Carsey Institute who analyzed the data.
Johnson’s analysis is based on newly released data for the year ending July 1, 2013. It shows there were 3.95 million births during those 12 months, compared with 4.31 million in the pre-recession 2006-07 period, a drop of 8.4 percent amid an overall U.S. population that continued to grow because of immigration.

The ruling class will push immigration to fix this, but that isn't the answer. Immigration will slow down, and immigrants will have the same birth rates as natives do.

I think actually, America has been suffering through a recession of many many years.
We are not a growing country.

Neither party is currently doing that. Nobody is doing that.
I really, really, really wish the GOP would get it together and take the lead on this.

Birth rates are slowing down almost everywhere. There are countries that know this, and want to address it. Russia, the first country that legalized abortion, is now looking at criminalizing it. Iran is considering a ban on vasectomies. Uganda just passed anti-gay laws, and China relaxed its one child policies. I doubt though, that these policy changes will be successful. China has already noticed that the birth rate is not going up, even after relaxing the one child policy.
We, on the other hand, are dominated by a political party that owes its existence to promoting anti child policies, from gay rights, to abortion, to promoting STDs which cause infertility. In order for us to change, we have to change the democrat party, and they won't. So I expect us to go over the demographic cliff.

America has been offshoring everything. For over an entire generation.
That process has made some people very, very wealthy, which is probably why it happened. But our country has been torn way way down.
I am simply saying both parties have torn America apart.
It is time for someone to start putting America back together.
We cannot simply continue to build up the world.

Only one major developed country made it past the demographic cliff and that’s Israel.
People who sell things like homes, new furniture, loans, new cars, boats and home additions are going to be in for a big shock as they see less and less buyers.
What's a baby cost to deliver? What about all the other followup heath issues? Anyone seen the price of food and gas?
Like in old America, it took good secure long term jobs, and good health benefits to raise families, have babies, buy homes, cars, etc.
Babies turn into immediate consumers and have lots of needs.. On top of a mortgage, car payments, insurance, food, clothing, huge insurance cost, repairs, utility costs....People have been squeezed for years now.
Most younger people in their 20s through 30s simply don't have that kind of money....Most never will.
The Left, which includes the Democrats, denigrates men and the family giving women the false impression of fulfillment absent both. This is the cause of the decline.

A lot of people are having children now because they know that their biological clock is running out fast.
His famous experiments were to set up rodent pens where a population of rodents could live with all of their needs being met, except space. They had an infinite amount of food, water, protection from predators, etc. But the pens were a finite space as the only limitation.
What Calhoun was expecting was that the population would explode, reach a peak, then level off to be sustainable within the finite space, but that was not what happened. Every time he ran this experiment, there were catastrophic changes in behavior in the rodents and a near complete collapse in the population.
Initially the population grew rapidly, doubling every 55 days. The population reached 620 by day 315, after which the population growth dropped markedly. The last surviving birth was on day 600. This period between day 315 and day 600 saw a breakdown in social structure and in normal social behavior.
Among the aberrations in behavior were the following: expulsion of young before weaning was complete, wounding of young, inability of dominant males to maintain the defense of their territory and females, aggressive behavior of females, passivity of non-dominant males with increased attacks on each other which were not defended against. After day 600, the social breakdown continued and the population declined toward extinction. During this period females ceased to reproduce. Their male counterparts withdrew completely, never engaging in courtship or fighting. They ate, drank, slept, and groomed themselves – all solitary pursuits. Sleek, healthy coats and an absence of scars characterized these males. They were dubbed “the beautiful ones”.
The conclusions drawn from this experiment were that when all available space is taken and all social roles filled, competition and the stresses experienced by the individuals will result in a total breakdown in complex social behaviors, ultimately resulting in the demise of the population.

The Left is enamored with Malthus, who predicted that the population will always expand to fill up the available resources, and will create misery if the population is not controlled. This has been falsified, especially by Calhoun. People can have all they want, and still not want to reproduce. In fact, by having all they want, they view children and the inconvenience of raising them as burdens. The left will continue to try and control us to prevent "overpopulation" well into our Calhoun colony collapse.
Calhoun's critics have claimed that his work has no relevance to humans, but I think it does. For instance it completely explains the left/right political divide in this country. Democrats are the party of high density populations, and they have the behaviors of a Calhoun "behavioral sink," the anti-child policies. Republicans are the party of low population density, and hold to traditional pro-human policies.
Every developed country, and every developing country, is urbanizing into high density cities. It is this, simply the stress of high density life, which can cause our population to collapse. The economy will just add a new layer onto it, and will be self reinforcing. As the population declines, the economy will shrink, and people will continue to choose not to have children.
These Mayan ruins were not built in a forest, this used to be a city more densely populated than Los Angeles is today. It functioned for hundreds of years, then the Mayan city states started collapsing. The greatest collapse happened over only two hundred years, when the population dropped 90%. The populations and culture never recovered. There were no catastrophes, no all out wars that really explain this. The current fad is to blame climate change, but I suspect there have been civilizational collapses where the population just stopped having enough children, for economic and other reasons. Scientists don't see it, because they are still under the spell of Malthus, who claimed it can't happen.
