He was a politician, hoping to unite the twelve tribes of Israel and rule over them, and fulfill the prophecy of re-establishing an independent kingdom.

But instead he was killed according to dozens of specific prophecies of the old testament exactly as foretold by Jews (prophets) who preceded Him by hundreds of years. Amazing for a politician.

No, I don't think so. The role of the Messiah was to unite the twelve tribes and establish a kingdom of Israel. If he didn't do that (which he didn't) then he didn't fulfill their prophecy.

The head Roman said he found no fault in Him and literally washed his hands of the whole business.

Yes. When minorities kill each other, the ruling power is usually wise to stay out of it. That's why black-on-black crime in Chicago goes quietly along, but newspapers seized on Trayvon Martin.

the messiah of the Old Testament (whose job was indeed to create the kingdom of Israel) and he denied it,

No, He did not deny it.

The most logical conclusion is that he was indeed one of the many men who thought he was capable of united those 12 tribes

No, that is not logical. The vast majority of Scriptures point to Jesus as being the Savior for the world. You need to read the Bible.

“So, an arrogant, leftist who makes lousy music is a believer?”

150 million records later, at least a half a dozen people don’t agree with you on the music angle.

“don’t agree with you on the music angle.”

Only quoting brownsfan on that. I know nothing of his music. Was just pointing out that if he can direct people to Christ; that’s a good thing.

He’s the King of Israel! Let him come down now from the cross, and we will believe in him. He trusts in God. Let God rescue him now if he wants him, for he said, I am the Son of God.’ In the same way the robbers who were crucified with him also heaped insults on him.”

It would explain why he traveled around talking to the various tribes, why he had 12 disciples,

How sad!

It is amazing that out of those 12 disciples, 11 died horrible deaths and the one that lived was boiled alive in oil, all because they refused to save themselves by recanting their preaching that he was the Son of God. Most were told they could go free if they would just recant.

What politician are you willing to die for or be boiled alive in oil for claiming they are the Son of God, when they are just a politician?

Yeah, thought so.

I've read the Bible, and you have to remember that these are stories, like Greek mythology and Beowulf. You piece together what you can. If you have a working brain, you eventually have to notice certain things:

-Old Testament prophecy posits a Messiah who will unite the 12 tribes and re-establish the Kingdom of Israel.
-Jesus, if he lived, was a traveling speaker with followers who many felt was this Messiah.
-He was killed.
-Much work has been done on this story since then to mold it into something relevant for other purposes.
-Meanwhile, it's been 2000 years and he hasn't come back.

But look, if it adds meaning to your life, have at it. Most of what humanity does is some form of entertainment or fulfillment or titillation. We only spend a small percentage of our intellect and energy on survival. All the rest is filler.

Remember, that was the Middle East and let’s face it, those folks are nuts even today. Politics and religion were the same. There was no separation of church and state; that’s an American invention.

The Irish still don’t consider themselves to be British?

They've never considered themselves British. The Republic Of Ireland is an independent nation. There's a bit of historical bad blood that you might consider studying.

After all this time. I know many Brits don’t even consider themselves to be “a part of Europe”, a fact most Americans find baffling

That's because the British Isles are islands separated from Europe, that have never been considered part of the European "Continent." They're a distinct people set apart on a distinct group of islands, just as Ireland is as well. Most Americans who find this baffling have a poor grasp of both history and geography.

I believe they are largely surrounded by mountain ranges and bodies of water, thus the separation.

They, whom? The British? They're on an island, thus the separation. Or, do you mean the Irish? They're on an island, thus the separation.

How old are you? I can't believe you made it through even an American public high school unless it was fairly recent, with such a strange muddle of confusion over two countries that played such a large role in our own history in the United States.

Thank you for those very specific quotes. It’s rare anyone goes to the trouble. I will look them up right now (because no offense, but I like context.)

SkyPilot,

Thank you for posting this. Not what I was expecting, but I am very happy that it was not against Jesus, but is Bono’s personal believer’s testimony in Jesus.

Please click on the link and listen to the 2 min, 45 sec interview.

I've read the Bible,

However, you are claiming things that aren't there such as your claim that Christ said he was not the Messiah. You should educate yourself more in what the Scripture says.

Much work has been done on this story since then to mold it into something relevant

No, there isn't any need to mold it into anything. The Bible stands on its own as truth. Many people like yourself try to mold it to fit the world system. However, the world system is transitory. God's purposes are much higher...eternal life.

Let me ask you: what do you think Christ's resonse would be to Bono's answer about Him?

Well; Peter piped up once and said, "Thou art the Christ; the Son of the Living God."

And Jesus answered and said unto him, "Blessed art thou, Simon Bar-jona: for flesh and blood hath not revealed it unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven."

And then, only 7 verses later said, "Get thee behind me, Satan."

Bono is at least an honest leftist, who generally practices what he preaches. If he were the norm for the left rather than the exception, political differences would be far more civil than they are now.

No he isn't. He's a major league Hypocrit who travels the world expecting Countries to tax their citizens and redistribute it to areas HE thinks is should be sent... All the while using tax laws and relocating his groups to places with the Lowest taxes. Fug BONO with a splintered log in the back side. It's a Sniveling little weasel!

Most of what was written in the New Testament came after he died,

Which parts were written before?

Which parts were written before?

I have a personal theory that much was written down by the scribes who were often present when Jesus spoke. I surmise these scribes were sent to catch Jesus in heresy. I further surmise the so called "Q" document that the synoptic gospels allegedly draw from are documents written by the scribes and made available by someone like Nicodemus. This is my total speculation.

Perhaps he is an unknowing follower of early Christianity that Arius defended against attacks by Athanasius, that ended up being declared a heresy in 379 upon The Emperor Theodosius’s Edict of 380. Both Arius and Athanasius were dead by then.

Summary. The so-called “Arian Controversy” was initially an argument between two men, Athanasius and Arius. Athanasius authored an exalted Christology, and Arius reacted against it. Then two bishops, Alexander in support of his secretary Athanasius, and Eusebius of Nicomedia in defense of the exiled Arius, transformed what might have remained a minor Egyptian theological debate into an ecumenical controversy. The term “Arian heresy” was coined by Alexander at a time when it was neither Arian nor heresy, but a widely-held set of traditional beliefs. Alexander said Arius had started something that was spreading through Christianity, but what was actually spreading was a reaction against what he did to Arius.

360 Council of Constantinople. A council of 72 bishops, including Bishop Wulfila of the Goths, convened in Constantinople (January) to review the conclusions of Ariminum and Seleucia the year before. They abolished the use of unscriptural terms in reference to God, and condemned as heresy all formulas contrary to this one:
The Tenth Consensus Creed (”Arian Confession”)

We believe in One God, Father Almighty, from whom are all things;

And in the only-begotten Son of God, begotten from God before all ages and before every beginning, by whom all things were made, visible and invisible, and begotten as only-begotten, only from the Father, only God from God, like to the Father that begat Him according to the Scriptures; whose origin no one knows, except the Father alone who begat Him. He, as we acknowledge, the only-begotten Son of God, the Father sending Him, came hither from the heavens, as it is written, for the undoing of sin and death, and was born of the Holy Ghost, of Mary the Virgin, according to the flesh, as it is written, and convened with the disciples, and having fulfilled the whole stewardship according to the Father’s will, was crucified and dead and buried and descended to the parts below the earth; at whom Hades itself shuddered: who also rose from the dead on the third day, and abode with the disciples, and, forty days being fulfilled, was taken up into the heavens, and sits at the right hand of the Father, to come in the last day of the resurrection in the Father’s glory, that He may render to every man according to his works.

And in the Holy Ghost, whom the only-begotten Son of God himself, Christ, our Lord and God, promised to send to the race of man, as Paraclete, as it is written, ‘the Spirit of truth’ (John 16:13), which He sent unto them when He had ascended into the heavens.

But the name of ‘Essence,’ which was set down by the Fathers in simplicity, and, being unknown by the people, caused offense, because the Scriptures contain it not, it has seemed good to abolish, and for the future to make no mention of it at all; since the divine Scriptures have made no mention of the Essence of Father and Son. For neither ought ‘Substance’ to be named concerning Father, Son and Holy Ghost. But we say that the Son is Like the Father, as the divine Scriptures say and teach; and all the heresies, both those which have been afore condemned already, and whatever are of modern date, being contrary to this published statement, be they anathema.
