On April 9th, a large group of Democrat representatives sent a letter asking President Obama to prohibit the importation of "military style, semiautomatic firearms."
Led by Reps. John Conyers, Jr. (D-MI) and Eliot Engel (D-NY), the letter was signed by "about 80" Democrats.
According to The Washington Times, Conyers and Engel are basing their request on the 1968 Gun Control Act, which they claim gives Obama "broad authority to prohibit guns and ammunition from being imported into the country." The exception would be if the products are "generally recognized as particularly suitable for or readily adaptable to sporting purposes."
The Democrat representatives stated that the import ban was enforced under George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton and that restoring it "would make our nation safer." They asserted that the ban would also "support neighboring Mexico where drug violence is fueled by firearms flowing south from the United States."(continued)

“a large group of Democrats”
A gaggle?
There is no sporting purposes clause in the constitution - the second amendment is not about hunting. Militarily suitable arms are precisely the types of arms that the second amendment was written about in the first place.
The Democrats have decided that Liberty is “un-American.”
Better yet, how about we ask the government to ban the importation of military-like, assault-style politics, like the naziism and communism that the current administration is practicing?
Conyers, Engel, and the other Democrat signatories also asked President Obama to broaden the import ban so that it includes the "newly-developed AK-type pistols that combine the firepower of a rifle with the concealability of a pistol." They argued that this "new breed of pistol" has no "sporting purpose."
Does anybody have information on these pistols? They sound interesting.
Although the date of April 9 is before the back down in Nevada...I still say the libs are nervous over the general discontent of the American populace and our willingness to display said discontent. God bless America and the 2nd amendment.

Google Impact guns, Century Intl.
(You’ll put out your eye!)
The only solution is a repeal on the 1968 GCA. Dems are forcing the issue.
(I've got another one)
All in serviceable condition, many with new barrels.
Perfect rifle for the mountain West. And the finest battle rifle ever made.
Get the president to make the laws, that’s the way around doing it legally, you know, like legislation.
The Constitution is so inconvenient.
You might be able to make it work if you have Popeye forearms.
Believe the CIA pistol is 7.62x39. Saw one in ‘Guns’ magazine that was a .223 poodle-shooter. You fasten a strap to your forearm or sumpin.
I love to shoot, but I'm not a big hunter. I would think what I do is sport. Putting 30 rounds very quickly through a silhouette with my WASR10 is great fun. And I do try to get far enough away to make it sporting.

Seems to me that rather than worry about the import of firearms, these Congressthings should worry about the Fedgov EXPORTING them.
That jackass, president Bush, banned the importation of anything produced by the China North Industries. The only thing I am aware they were sending here were some really neat copies of older American guns such as the 97 Winchester pump, the M1911 .45acp. The 1887 Winchester Lever Action shotgun, the Walther Olympia, 22 target pistol also the BRNO .22 rifle.
I am sure there was a bunch more but I lost any respect I had for Bush after that. I almost forgot, the Polytech AK-47 type semi auto. and Tokarev pistols.
What was his beef with those folks?
As for the replicas, I’d wonder how reliable they were. Made in China = might blow up in your face.
