Black Bear Mauls Florida Woman, Drags Her Out of Garage

The hunt is on today for a black bear who mauled a woman at her home in an upscale central Florida neighborhood, leaving her with injuries to her face, legs and torso and requiring her to get 40 stitches to the head.

Terri Frana of Lake Mary, Fla., went to her garage Saturday evening to grab bicycles for her children to ride down to their neighbor's house when the attack happened, according to her husband, Frank Frana.

As soon as the children left, Frana, 45, saw two bears in the driveway. She walked to the patio area where there were five bears eating trash that they had pulled out of the garage, her husband said.

"The bear got up on [its] hind legs and started to maul her, opened its jaws and put her head in the mouth and dragged her towards the woods," Frank Frana said. "Somehow she was able to pull herself out."

“....... a woman once outran a bear, throwing clothes off which the bear at each little turn would stop and smell. At least that’s what Ripley’s Believe it not wrote.”....

Without pictures, I’m not buying it!

On the local Panama City news, I am looking at a Black Bear right now. It is in a large tree and appears to be a large one. They are estimating it’s weight at 300 lbs.

The fish and wildlife people just got on scene with a tranquilizer gun. It is in Springfield which is a suburb of Panama City.

Do a bit of research, the lady was looking for her young kids at the time,

The stupid cliff in this story gets taller with each rendition. So she had kids, knew the bears were around, and did nothing about them. There is not much I can say about this that can be printed. Stupid is just where this attitude starts and it gets much worse from there.

There is no defense for this absolute disregard for her children's safety. I guess Disney wins when her kids become bear dinner but until that time she scores points using them as bear bait.

Does she also keep rattle snakes in the kids bathtub? This woman, mother, has no contact with reality. She and reality do not even speak the same language.

I get it very well. People create problem bears then the bears must be destroyed.

This lady was not only a part of creating the problem bears she then, very recklessly, stupidly, and irresponsibly, lost track of her child/children in the middle of the potentially lethal situation she helped create.

What is it you don't think I get?? From hunting behind dogs with a rifle, spot and stalk archery hunting, or handgun hunting and with many depredation permits I've had a lot of one on one experience with bears.

Truly wild bears are never a problem but the garbage bears that ignorant people create will always have to be killed.

It is not complicated at all. This is not Disney land.

“Having never had a problem with a bear, I would say, makes you “fortunate”.

What I said is that I have never had a problem with a wild bear. I did not say I had never had a bear problem. I was born and raised on a big ranch not far from Lassen National Park and there are plenty of flatlander/city slicker spoiled black bears around that ranch. They just do not last long. After they learn that there is an easier way to get food from people and people things they never stop. If they can’t find the garbage cans or an open dump they will break into cabins and houses. Or better yet they will start killing calves and colts. They even used to bring the problem bears up from Yosemite to our area and turn them loose.

We didn’t create the problem but we solved the problems every time we found one.

This ladies attitude about bears is clear. She walked out into the middle of them. She was plumb disney trained. The only way to solve that bear problem now is to kill the bears.

If they transplant them they will just cause someone else problems and sooner or later someone will have to kill them.

Keep up the disney work, we really don’t mind taking care of the garbage, the garbage bears that is.....

And no I really do not have to live with the problems that someone else has created......”

What I meant when I said “fortunate”, was being roughed up by a bear...NOT having a bear problem(in that they are in your garbage).

I realize there are people who do not practice wildlife etiquette, and Yes, shame on them....but bears don’t need humans to seek out easier ways to find food. And by you having solved some problems, it was because you were living with the problems others created.

And LOL, don’t blame Disney...because let’s not forget to include the ones who live in the mountains who too, encounter the same demise. I didn’t grow up a “flatlander”(as you say)even though I spent time in Florida. And in the mountains where I live, we understand what transplanted bears create but, I can tell you there are plenty of “mountain folk” who do the same stupid things(IF, that’s what the woman did. I wasn’t there). Needless to say...some live to tell about it, some don’t.

Flatlander is not synonymous with ‘city-slicker’. And stupidity is not a geographical location.

This story yes, is a negative towards bears but about 9 months there was that bear in Pa. who had a jar stuck around his head and these people freed it.

Silly ol' bear.

Humans created that bear problem, plain and simple. There can only be two possible outcomes from the start of that stupidity.

The bears are removed before they harm someone there and then they will instantly become someone else's problem to deal with.

OR They will attack someone there and will be destroyed locally.

It seems that they took door number two this time.

We grew up helping the county LEO's find stupid lost flatlanders. Sometimes they would be able to walk out and sometimes they brought them out in buckets and/or bags. I've found more than one child that the parents were too damned stupid to keep track of.

Sorry to impose some reality into your limited thinking but the most dangerous animal by far on this earth in Human. All of our children know that at a very young age. They know well and understand, from first hand observation, that the gene pool is regularly cleaned of those who do not know, understand, and respect the natural world.

What we have here is the arrogance of flatlander/city slickers who think that they know everything about everywhere. Look over your shoulder at the "inner city" a few blocks away and try to impress me about your knowledge of animals. Explain to how this continuing reality demonstrates to me your ability to deal with lethal and threatening situations so that none of your children die.

In your culture you accept the threats to your children from the gangs and drug cartels. In your culture you can not, have not, and will not protect your own youth in your own back yard.

In my culture we permanently eliminate the known threats to our children's lives at the first opportunity.

Which culture would you say was more civilized?

Being an educated mountain boy I have all of the comparative statistics of deaths per K of youth in the different areas. If you want to discuss this further we can.

Well, I’m not sure why your all twisted up about bears, but...ok. I wasn’t referring to “bears” when I said, Wooooo...the things you get into. Looks like your limited thinking precedes you. And, several times in your posts.

And more importantly, I am FULLY aware of the stupidity of the multitudes. Nor am I saying they are right for what they do, or don’t know. AND, you cannot live where I live and NOT know about one of the most dangerous animals(after man)are. Are you kidding? LOL. What you “think” is MY culture, is worlds away from what you are talking about, that I don’t understand.

The time I spent time in Florida, I did so because it was job related. So, your ability to discern what I’ve been saying is very minimal. This includes your ignorance as to what a flatlander is. Why do you believe that anyone who lives on flat land lives in a city, and is “slick”? LOL. Your “oldenuff2no” that’s not true.

I’ve already mentioned I live in, and am from the mountains...and that I am aware of what a bear problem is caused by humans. But we also have instances where I live that when we get very little run-off, the bears will come down to any water they can find, and, hit up any orchards they can find. And probably garbage along the way too. All unprovoked by humans. Where I live, we understand that nature too, sometimes creates problem bears but we still love the bear. Did you know this? About nature?

So, it’s a shame you paint with such a broad “mountain-educated” brush, because it’s not representative of all mountain folk. The funny thing we have with ‘lost’ people, is that they are tourists from OTHER surrounding mountainous states! Mostly.

And even though YOU may forget, there are certain mountain folk types who, in and of themselves regularly clean out their own gene pool because they don’t understand or respect the “natural” world. So, to me...neither culture is more civilized than the other. And, I’d be lying if I said there were no stupid mountain parents who do the same darn thing when it comes to their kid’s safety. Your such a BS’er. With your incompassionate attitude towards humans, I don’t know how you coexist WITH nature. Honestly.

Peace be to ya, though.

Yours is an interesting opinion and proves beyond any doubt that old adage to be True.

Assumed intellectual experience combined with arrogance and a limited horizon of reality makes for a very boring life.

I've been to see the elephant, all over the world. I have lived in many cultures and walked away with life and limb intact from all of them. I accomplished all assigned tasks and missions in all of these different cultures. I also speak from the experience gained from 23+ years of observing others on their home ground.

I still much prefer the culture of the high mountains when the cops are hours away and all problems are my own to solve. I guess that speaks to the difference in our abilities and experience.

So what am I BSing about? Killing a bear, or many of them? They are easy to kill and not hard to find. My son took his first bear when he was 12. Black bears are huge chickens in their wild state. If they know you are there they are not. Every kid who is raised in the woods knows this, and although they are rare, knows the exceptions to this truth.

There are two basic problems in our discussion. You know nothing about truly wild animals in their natural habitat and you judge others by you own very limited experience and knowledge.

And true to the arrogant form of the ignorant, you make a personal attack out of it when all the other tools in your box have failed.

Have a great day. I'm done.

Look, it’s no fault of mine that you live a boring life because of your OWN limited experiences. There are no personal attacks by me either, as I’m just going by YOUR posts. I don’t have a box of anything that I use against you. Really? The arrogance lies in your assuming what, and why that woman was attacked. Were you there? Or did you just believe what you read in the article and come to your own conclusion that by God, this could only happen to people in civilization? Because that’s what your post screams to me.

My remark in stating you are a BS’er had NOTHING to do with killing bears(which you seem to be obsessed with doing), it had to do with you failing to acknowledge that what you accuse “flatlanders” of in the way of safety, happens IN the mountains, TO mountain folks. If you say it doesn’t, then your a BS’er. If you READ my posts, you would know that was what I said.

And well, I appreciate you trying to educate me about bear behavior, but I’ve spent my life, other than time in Florida, in the mountains of the Continental Divide. I know and understand the behavior of ALL the big game where I live. Many of them, I eat. And no. No cops getting here anytime soon, either.

You have a good day too.
