I actually applaud this experiment. Let’s see how it works out. Vermont, as it happens, shares a long border with New Hampshire, which prides itself on having no income tax or sales tax. Let’s watch how people vote with their feet.

I agree with the above paragraph. I am curious to see how this experiment turns out.

This is exactly what the relationship between the several States and the Federal Government was meant to be.

The states are ‘experimental laboratories’ for government; health care, social issues, and economics conducted on a micro scale.

Now all they have to do is raise taxes by about 75% to pay for it. For the bums and out of work that will be fine, but for the working people, they will have to raise taxes by about $12000 per person per year.

Let’s watch how people vote with their feet.

Vermont has no restrictions on gun ownership. New Hampsire does. That's going to make a lot of the old Vermont families stay put.

Its the Left’s chance to make a showcase of single payer. That is why we have federalism in this country.

I do not think it will work. Americans are not better at managing socialism than Canadians, Europeans or Russians are.

I certainly don’t mind experimentation within the states. But Vermont is not at all a typical state. If Single Payer works there, it may not indicate anything useful for the other 49 states (or 56, or whatever).

Well, if the Vermont folks want it, let them have it. Just don’t expect the taxpayers from the other states to later bail Vermont out.

I agree.

Although I think that single-payer is a fundamentally flawed idea, it is far better for one state to attempt it--and the other 49 states and DC can see how well it works--than it would be for the entire nation to be subjected to it, in the hope that it might turn out well.

The states should be, indeed, individual laboratories of democracy.

This experiment will never take off, nor go anywhere. IF they get federal approval to take medicare and other funds, they still have to raise 1.6 billion dollars, or put more accurately, $20,000 from every taxpaying family in New Hampshire.

Won’t work, the people won’t put up with that much new STATE taxes. It would make state of New Hampshire tax returns in the SAME tax bracket as federal taxes. But hey, that’s not the favorite liberal target - it’ll come half from the citizens (which means only $10,000 from every taxpaying family) and 800 million in new corporate taxes - in other words, nearly $85,000 in new taxes for every New Hampshire based corporation.

Dream proposal, passed by dreamers, and will never be enacted.

I've come to the conclusion that for Liberty to prevail, Property (wealth) taxes need to be eliminated.

So, I guess it's Consumption taxes that must prevail.

Vermont will become a favorite destination for those who are indigent and sick. More poor people and fewer doctors.

This is how it should work-each state taking its own direction, and the country as a whole can see what works and what doesn’t.
