Sylvia Burwell, whom President Obama is expected to nominate to replace Kathleen Sebelius as the secretary of health and human services, has a long professional career in business and consulting, but lacks substantial professional or political experience with health care.
Her résumé, according to Dan Diamond of the Advisory Board, only includes a stint as a board member at the University of Washington Medical Center. Burwells track record in health care is not well-established, Diamond writes in a briefing for the Advisory Board, a health-care consulting firm.
Her predecessor, Secretary Sebelius, served as Kansas state insurance commissioner for eight years, giving her control over, for instance, regulating health insurers and approving or rejecting the premiums they set.
Burwells private-sector experience has been with McKinsey, where she did consulting for financial services firms, and the Gates and Walmart Foundations, where she held executive positions. In the public sector, shes worked on the budget and economics side of things, working for the National Economic Council in the Clinton White House and, most recently, running the Obama administrations Office of Management and Budget. There, shes been widely praised, and the OMB does of course have to deal with the implementation of federal health-care programs.
To be fair, neither of George W. Bushs HHS secretaries had private-sector health-care experience, but both of them were governors, and each state administers its own Medicaid program, which makes of the largest single expenditure in every state (I think). Moreover, they had experience implementing significant health-care reforms of their own: Tommy Thompson created BadgerCare while governor of Wisconsin, which expanded that states Medicaid system; Michael Leavitt did something similar as governor of Utah, implementing a reform program in 1994 called HealthPrint. Bill Clintons HHS secretary, Donna Shalala, doesnt seem to have had health-care experience. None of them, one notes, had to implement a sweeping reform of the United States health-care system.

doesn’t surprise me... look at the top. did he have any experience running anything?
fie!!.... who needs experience... good intentions should be enough, right?
Why break with tradition?
There is not a person alive today, nor was there EVER a person alive with the competence or experience to make something like Obamacare work.
The system is designed to fail.
Anyone who is appointed to run it is nothing more than a patsy.
LOL the amazing part to me is that Sebelius was actually elected governor in a state like Kansas.
That’s OK. HHS isn’t really about healthcare anyway.
So?
Who needs “experience”??
She’s a RELIABLE LEFTIST COMMIE and that’s all that matters.
good point
Given the Obamadork’s record...what official in his “adminsitration” has any useful experience in anything...let alone in the positions they’re supposed to supervise.
This is the greatest collection of talentless slugs evah!
The ability to lie about everything is the only skill that any Obunghole minion needs.
Neither is Obamacare.
It is incredible to think that these are the people overseeing the NIH (which is under HHS).
Maybe a person with some actual biomedical experience would be worthwhile?
Now he is in charge of not handing out grazing leases.
Inexperience from the top down always works! /S
Why not a physician or surgeon?
Because ObamaCARE/RomneyCARE is not about healthcare.
It is about State control of life ... and death.
Rumor has it that that surgeon in LA (Vlasic is his name IIRC) who's a member of the Animal Liberation Front and has openly and specifically said that he'd support the murder of medical researchers who work with animals might be available.I understand that he's on Osama Obama's short list for the post,
Her father was also governor - their own version of a political dynasty? Kansas hasn’t always been a state dominated by Republican politics but more of the old style Truman Democrat.
My parents, whom have been gone for a lot of years, were Democrat to the core but it was a totally different back then. We had lots of guns in the house, my dad was an avid hunter, we went to church several times a week, my mom owned her own business, and they were weekend farmers.
