The U.S. Department of Justice sued the Town of Oyster Bay and Town Supervisor John Venditto Thursday for allegedly discriminating against black people in two affordable housing programs -- one aimed at first-time buyers, the other at senior citizens.
In a complaint filed in federal court in Central Islip, prosecutors said both programs violated the federal Fair Housing Act because preferences were given to residents, or their children, living in the town, which has few black residents. To ensure that black people were not discriminated against in the selection process, the town should have given equal treatment to prospective occupants from the larger, more diverse metropolitan area, the complaint said.
"Housing programs designed to help young families and senior citizens purchase homes should be available to people of all races, including African-Americans," Eastern District U.S. Attorney Loretta Lynch said in a statement Thursday. "To the extent residency preferences prevent families and senior citizens from purchasing homes because of race, ethnicity or color, the preferences violate federal law and cannot be tolerated."
Jocelyn Samuels, the acting attorney general for civil rights, said in a statement, "if municipalities wish to adopt residency preferences such as those imposed by the defendants, they most do so in way that does not discriminate against people based on race."
Because of the town's policies, none of the occupants of the housing aimed at first-time home buyers are black, and, at most, a handful of occupants of the senior citizen housing are black, the complaint says.

The community’s poor and elderly are supposed to be taken care of by the family and/or the community, not the fedgov.
IIRC, Housing in Oyster Bay is anything but affordable. Isn’t President Theodore Roosevelt’s home there?
Well, since Oyster Bay went majority Obama by six points, I hope they get all the section 8 that can possibly be fitted inside the township.
The more the merrier. They deserve it!
I smell a shakedown.
Might solve a number of problems, all at once. :-) :-)
Must be a few cemeteries in Oyster Bay too !
Yes, I went to visit President Roosevelt’s (teddy) that sits overlooking Oyster Bay...great veranda terrace...nice town, but then I was just a tourist!
To the racists in government, everything is about race. I am utterly sick of these slime sucking scum bags.
RE: IIRC, Housing in Oyster Bay is anything but affordable. Isnt President Theodore Roosevelts home there?
Yes. See here:

Theodore Roosevelt spent his first summer in Oyster Bay with his family in 1874. Through the ensuing years as he rose to power, Oyster Bay would frequently serve as backdrop and stage on which many of his ambitions were realized. Several places connected to Theodore Roosevelt in his lifetime remain, while others have been lost. A number of efforts to memorialize TR in Oyster Bay have been made since his death in 1919.
Oh they're just getting started.
In the future when a town such as Oyster Bay collects the garbage, paves the roads and plows the streets they also need to find some black people in some other town and collect their garbage, pave their roads and plow their streets.
The bottom line is that any town in the country that doesn't have enough blacks living in it can't do anything at all.
You live in NJ. What are you sucking up?
BTW TOB didn't vote for Obama.
Awww, c’mon you know that criminal behavior is a result of poor economic status. If the little darlings had a little more wealth distribution slapped on them the cops would have been cooling their heels at the Krispy Kreme.
Oyster Bay Cove is a small incorporated village inside of the much larger Town of Oyster Bay.
Don’t live in NJ anymore though.
The Town of Oyster Bay voted for Romney.
Oyster Bay is the biggest town/city in NYS that voted against Obama.
The feds are punishing the Town of Oyster Bay.
This would actually make more sense.
Still, I know MANY upper middle class peeps in NY/NYC/NJ who were BIGTIME Obama fans. Hopefully they’ll feel the pinch in their wallets at least as much as the rest of the country is right now.
They took the federal government’s affordable housing money, they are obliged to abide by the federal government’s rules, which have always included aggressively seeking black and Hispanic tenants in supermajority white areas.
It’s far worse in Westchester County, where the county government broke the rules, but they are trying to make villages and towns which never sought or accepted any affordable housing money, compromise their schools and their safety by building subsidized housing and aggressively recruiting minorities from the Bronx and Yonkers to move in.
A city runs a housing program; and can’t put it’s own citizens first in line for benefits?????
Why didn’t the Long Island Medium see this coming.....?
More ‘divide and conquer’. Fedgov loves this game.
