Country music has been very good to Collin Raye, and the chart topper returned the favor many times over with hits like Love, Me and My Kind of Girl.
Perhaps that's why Raye dedicates part of his new autobiography A Voice Undefeated to what he calls the genre's biggest problem. Today's country songs, he writes, too often lack the "real life, real love and real loss" qualities that capture the best the genre once offered.

“about as emotional deep as toe pool”
As deep as spit on a sidewalk.
Now that’s deep. :^)
I’ve tried watching the country awards. Ay yi yi. I cant stand Blake Shelton.
Nashville aint got it without the Bakersfield style. I like George Strait and some om Miranda Lambert , Paisley and Brooks but the rest of it is kind of lame
I can think of two songs Blake Shelton has recorded that I’ll listen to. These are:
God Gave Me You
It’s All About Tonight
Grant it, there isn’t much to the second song, but I especially like the drive and groove.
Brad Paisleys, ‘Don’t Drink the Water’, featuring Blake doesn’t count. I like that song.
Sorry, but there would be no Bakersfield sound without Nashville. Buck Owens, the Mr. Bakerfield Sound himself, was influenced by those early Nashville giants.
I’m right there with you. Over the last few years I’ve listened less and less to the country station, the ‘new’ stuff is garbage imho.
I’ll stick with my cd’s and youtube for the real country sound.
Blake is funny! I love him. I’m not into country but I might start, because it have a city crush on nashville. I love watching him on the voice.
I never listen to radio, let alone country. The “hillbilly” anthems are enough to drive a man to drink.
I listen to my CDs, iPod, Grooveshark, or Rdio.
Nashville gone Hollywood ruins it.
Bottle and natural blonde little girls with no life experience singing about their “independence”...trying to be soulful without soul. Boy bands propped up by giant multinational corporations who pretend to be good ol’ boys.
What a joke.
Music should be about living a life and then singing about it. Johnny Cash, for instance.
I was country,
When country wasn’t kewel,
I was country,
From head down to my shoo ooze .....
I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison, and I went to pick her up in the rain, but before I could get to the station in my pickup truck, she got runned over by a damned old train. And, I’ll hang around as long as you will let me.And, I never minded standin’ in the rain. No, a’ you don’t have to call me darlin’, darlin’.You never even call me...Well, I wonder why you don’t call me.Why don’t you ever call me by my name?
I like Blake a lot personally but only care for a few songs. He’s a very personable performer, which has gotten him far. His songs are either home runs or strikeouts. Not many home runs.
I’m a retired pedal steel and Tele player. One of my best friends was a Buckaroo. He played steel for Buck for years. I tried listening to WGAR, “Cleveland Country,” on Sunday. It was like listening to The Buzzard, WMMS, during the Eighties! Power Rock ballads. It sure didn’t sound country to me!
I’ll take BOB WILLS and THE TEXAS PLAYBOYS any day! Western swing is the best, followed by Bluegrass.
Favorite song, “I’m feelin’ Bad”.

Chew tobacco—spit.
Don't get me wrong, I love country western music - just not the overproduced pop junk I hear mostly.
If you go to Buck Owens' Crystal Palace in Bakersfield, you'll see bronze statues of Buck's influences : Bob Wills, Elvis Presley, George Jones (mmmm, White Lightnin)and Johnny Cash. (of course there's also a statue of Buck) LOL!!
Bears repeating, thanks, Merle Haggard, Johnny Cash and Buck Owens agree
Do you play the occasional gig? Naturally you still have your toys.....tell me you have your toys.
We’ve been in the music bus. for a long time, but have not played in Nashville. Took a break from playing pro. for a season. Raising kids become more important than the constant hustle for gigs, touring, and studio work.
We now have two kids who are musicians. One child (aspiring bass player, guitar, songwriter, singer) has a Strat, but really wants to get a Tele. When we were first looking at used guitars, I recommended a Tele, but he was set on playin’ a Strat. He loves SRV. Now he realizes how great the Tele’s are, so that will be his next big toy purchase.
One thing’s for certain: used Strat’s (American, Japan, or MIM) are easy to find. Tele’s......not so much.
Love that song
