Insightful interview. I'm a fan of traditional country (Hank Williams, Eddy Arnold, Chet Atkins, Earl Scruggs, George Jones, Vern Gosdin, Keith Whitley, etc.)as well as some of the "newer" artists (Vince Gill, Ricky Skaggs, George Strait, Brooks and Dunn, Alan Jackson, Brad Paisley, etc.). With that being said, most of the songs the up-and-comers are releasing are about as emotional deep as toe pool.

“about as emotional deep as toe pool”

As deep as spit on a sidewalk.

I’m right there with you. Over the last few years I’ve listened less and less to the country station, the ‘new’ stuff is garbage imho.

I’ll stick with my cd’s and youtube for the real country sound.

Nashville gone Hollywood ruins it.

Bottle and natural blonde little girls with no life experience singing about their “independence”...trying to be soulful without soul. Boy bands propped up by giant multinational corporations who pretend to be good ol’ boys.

What a joke.

Music should be about living a life and then singing about it. Johnny Cash, for instance.

I was country,

When country wasn’t kewel,

I was country,

From head down to my shoo ooze .....

I was drunk the day my mom got out of prison, and I went to pick her up in the rain, but before I could get to the station in my pickup truck, she got runned over by a damned old train. And, I’ll hang around as long as you will let me.And, I never minded standin’ in the rain. No, a’ you don’t have to call me darlin’, darlin’.You never even call me...Well, I wonder why you don’t call me.Why don’t you ever call me by my name?

For all the purists, I recommend KOKE FM out of Austin. Independently owned and they play what they want, with no corporate soundtrack. I have heard artists there that I would never have heard anywhere else. Look them up on the web and you can listen to them online.

Well, I’m a member of a country club,Country music is what I love, I drive an old Ford pick-up truck, I do my drinkin’ from a dixie cup, I’ve got friends in low places, I’m going back to a better class of losers,This up-town living’s really got me down,I need friends who don’t pay their bills on home computers,And who buy their coffee beans already ground, You think it’s disgraceful that they drink three-dollar wine, But a better class of loser suits me fine, Prop me up beside the juke box if I die.

I’ve been dabbling in the genre writing stuff myself... but honestly, I don’t think the writers are having the problems. It’s the food chain. They want the same old shallow stereotyped stuff. Don’t make the audience exercise more than 2 or 3 brain cells. Pickup truck + country road + unmarried partner + liquor + night + sex = Great Hits Of 2013.
