A dangerous new form of a powerful stimulant is hitting markets nationwide, for sale by the vial, the gallon and even the barrel.
The drug is nicotine, in its potent, liquid form extracted from tobacco and tinctured with a cocktail of flavorings, colorings and assorted chemicals to feed the fast-growing electronic cigarette industry.
These e-liquids, the key ingredients in e-cigarettes, are powerful neurotoxins. Tiny amounts, whether ingested or absorbed through the skin, can cause vomiting and seizures and even be lethal. A teaspoon of even highly diluted e-liquid can kill a small child.
But, like e-cigarettes, e-liquids are not regulated by federal authorities. They are mixed on factory floors and in the back rooms of shops, and sold legally in stores and online in small bottles that are kept casually around the house for regular refilling of e-cigarettes.

I know lots of people who switched to them, 3/4 of the smokers where I work switched. But none of them are getting away from nicotine with them, it’s just changing delivery system.
Because this article is pure nanny-state hyperbole to support regular cigarette sales (and taxes).
Liquid nicotine vapor is far less toxic than smoked tobacco when used as directed.
This is a non-issue for sealed commercial e-cigarettes. It only becomes a problem when people buy the liquid in bulk to make their own refills.
The “poison” issue arises when people ingest or spill the bulk liquid onto their skin. Nicotine is poisonous at such high levels.
There should be a warning to not ingest and wear protection when handling the liquid but banning it is just more nanny-state stupidity.
Like the idiots who want to stop smoking in the military for health reasons.
Because it’s a lot safer than using cigarettes?
Are we sure about that?
That’s fine too. Plus they don’t come with all the other crap in cigarettes.
Thanks for letting the ter’rists know, New York Times!
How many people do you know who have overdosed on methadone?
Yep. Inhaling vapor is a lot healthier than inhaling smoke, quite sure of that.
I know someone who could. He smokes catnip and potpourri or anything else. He has been awake 5 straight days and wrecked his car this morning at Wal-Mart, hitting a light post
I can’t really answer; I am still using nicorette which is just a different form of nicotine injestion. Still staying away from cig’s minus a stumble here and there last month. I truly don’t know if this is true or not, but I read a couple years ago cigarette tobacco is treated with hundreds of chemicals before it makes it to the consumer. All I can say is since January it has been a bitch staying away from them but I fear what my future will be if I continue (and certainly don’t want to be strung out on them should a SHTF scenario occur; the less vice in one’s life the better!). Next week begins regular chewing gum and running (ugh)...
Hey CrippleCreek, I managed to quit smoking using the e-cig. I haven't bought a tradition tobacco product for 2 months, and I've now gone to the zero nicotine cartridges.
Now I just have to watch the food intact, because everything tastes good again. :-)
For the same reason people drink coffee, I would think.
Yeah, nicotine is a poison. So is water, at the correct dosage.
Nicotine, assuming you don’t have high blood pressure, is a short-acting, harmless (albeit addicting, as is coffee) stimulant that raises awareness, alertness, and does all the same things coffee does.
More to the point, it’s none of your business.
Your analogy is horrible, unless you claim it’s the nicotine in cigarettes that causes cancer.
Discostu’s point is correct. Yes, people are giving up actual paper cigarettes, but with the e-cig you are still getting nicotine, mouth feel and the heat they are used to. So as Discostu said, it’s like giving up hard alcohol and switching to mixed drinks. Or beer.
Except e-cigs are not on fire, and thus not filling people’s lungs with cancer-causing smoke.
Except e-cigs don’t cause cancer.
I vape, and I love it!
One thing that I have NEVER seen mentioned in any article or on any news story is that the e-liquid is readily available with any amount of nicotine or even no nicotine at all.
None of my business?
you sound like a leftist decided who can have an opinion
I’m sucking on my KangerTech vaporizer right now as I type, LOL! Mmmm, yummy hazelnut mixed with a dash of cinnamon. Much better than those nasty cowboy killers I used to smoke. NY Slimes can kiss my butt! Oh, wait, I don’t have any cigarette butts for them to kiss anymore. Oh well, they can kiss my KangerTech!
Cheers!
