A soldier suffering from emotional problems and dressed in combat fatigues opened fire Wednesday at Fort Hood, killing three people in a flash of violence that brought back memories of the 2009 mass shooting that left 13 dead at the Army base in Texas.
The gunman eventually killed himself, ending the carnage first reported about 4:30 p.m. But at least 16 people were wounded, four critically, in his mad rampage.
Rep. Michael McCaul (R-Texas), chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, identified the shooter as Ivan Lopez, 34. He served in Iraq for four months in 2011 and had transferred from an unnamed Texas military base to Fort Hood in February for mental health evaluation and treatment, fort commander Lt. Gen. Mark Milley said in a news conference Wednesday night.
Lopez, who was married, was being examined to determine if he suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder, Milley said.

The FOB Green Bean ran out of white chocolate mocha syrup. It’s very, very disheartening when that happens.
Apparently one can buy a handgun that is not powerful. Who knew?
Perhaps he he had been indoctrinated to believe - to KNOW - that he MUST suffer some form of disorder after serving in a war zone.
The stupidity is even worse than you imagine. A friend of mine in the AF sent me a pic (couple of years ago now) of herself at Bagram. I noticed in the picture she had her sidearm in a shoulder holster and there was no magazine in it. Via a facebook exchange I asked her about it. Standing policy - weapons on base are unloaded. W ... T ... F !!! In a war zone, surrounded by valuable personnel and equipment they are basically unarmed and unready to defend these assets.
What, the libtards are going to say "that's security forces' job..." Duh, these people are in our Military - they all are "security forces" and had better be ready to act like it at a moments notice!
I wonder if they were high-powered, fully automatic combat fatigues...
yeah- currently have a close friend that claims
their son has PTSD- never saw combat/did NOT
patrol- but was in Afghanistan.(support person)
Got out and went back to his old ways-
Drugs/alcohol and after a couple of DWI’s
is claiming this- he is getting help-
AND unemployment- SOON to be disability!-
If he only served in Iraq for four months tells me he was sent back for a reason. I don’t believe four months is a normal deployment. Why did he come back so early?
I know it was many years ago, but in Korea you needed 36 points to come back. Front line units received 4 points a month. Away from the front line, the artillery zone received only 3 points per month, further back, behind the civilian line it was 2 points. I suspect a similar program is in effect today.
I do not think this is new. It is insane - but it is not new.
The guards at our Marine barracks in Beruit in 1983 were similarly unarmed and unready to defend the building and its occupants.
Check out the picture of the MP on the page, sashaying to the rescue. Barry Bathhouse military.
What picture are you talking about? The gate guard approaching a vehicle? You can't be serious.
Pardon me, sashaying to the main gate.
What’s really interesting is that if Bush were still president, you’d see that guy as a professional doing his job.
But they are too worried about Sergeant Smith shooting Sergeant Jones in a drunken jealous rage over some femme fatale. But being in the profession of arms our troops need to be armed. In fact, all troops E7 and higher should have to have a sidearm on their person at all times save PT and sometimes during PT>
I know. I wasn’t suggesting that the only place it came from. I was just saying that from the article I read, it strongly appears like we knew something was wrong with this guy and either it fell through the cracks, or wasn’t acted upon fast enough.
But like with Chris Kyle taking that PTSD marine to a shooting range...maybe these are not very intuitive things to do??
“I agreee but I wonder what kind of chemical treatment he had received in childhood for that catch all Attention Deficite Syndrome?”
Maybe he had 80HD? That’s what the obamaphone users call it when they needs their meds for a disability!
The modern explosives are so powerful that they can cause brain bruising or brain bleeding in bystanders 1/4 mile away from the blast. That is why we have a lot of guys returning with TBI (traumatic brain injury). This related DailyNews article erred when it said:
Lopez reported that he suffered a brain injury during his tour in Iraq, but was not wounded in combat, Milley said.Brain trauma is a wound, and it is much harder to treat in many cases than a physical injury.
The use of drones and high-powered sights is a good thing to keep our soldiers far away, because wars against these ghouls cannot be fought humanely or face-to-face. That's an "antiquated European notion" of honor among soldiers.
“We are going to get to the bottom of exactly what happened,” Obama said.
“The shooting, the third such incident at a military base in the United States in about six months, started at about 4 p.m. local time (2100 GMT) and put Fort Hood on immediate lockdown.
Milley said the shooter walked into one of the unit buildings, opened fire, then got into a vehicle and fired from there. He then went into another building and opened fire again, until he was engaged by Fort Hood law enforcement.
When confronted by a female military police officer, he killed himself with his semi-automatic weapon in the parking lot.
“He was approaching her at about 20 feet. He put his hands up, then reached under his jacket, pulled out the (.45) and she pulled out her weapon and then she engaged, and he then he put the weapon to his head,” Milley said”

There’s a whole host of reasons why he only spent 4 months in Iraq. For starters, that was the year we were winding down there. Lots of personnel and operational turmoil happens in these transitions. He could have been a replacement for some other soldier who had to come off deployment early. He could have been injured in some way and evac’d out of Iraq. His entire unit may have only deployed there for 4 months.
It’s probably been said, but it hasn’t been Bush’s War(s)® since 2008 when Obama held to the same policies.
I might blame Obama’s ROEs.
BUT - I remember That they said N. Hassan was a victim of PTSD when it happened. (Technically I think they called it Pre-PTSD or something weird.)
That's just what the assistant base commander said last night in the press conference. He said that soldiers shouldn't be armed walking around base, and that security forces should be called. A reporter asked him how long it would take for armed police to arrive at a scene like this, and he said, "Within ten to fifteen minutes." A complete loon, completely brainwashed.
