Because it is damn easy to get a weapon on base. One week after 9/11 I was working on an Army base. They had a Bradley fighting vehicle, two machine guns set up with lots of sandbags and lots of concrete barricades to zig-zag through at the base entrance. Upon entering the base, my truck was inspected as my ID was being verified. They used mirrors to look under my truck. They searched inside my truck as I watched. I noticed they completely ignored my first aid kit. I told the marine (yes, marines were guarding an Army base) that he should check it because it is the same size as a M-9 case. He said, "thanks".
Nothing new. That's been the case since before I joined the Army in 1976, and storing them in the arms room applied only to soldiers living in barracks. Soldiers living in post housing could retain their own personal firearms in their quarters.
...that includes soldier who live off base, they are no permitted by new post regulations to have their personally owned guns in their off post housing, including the homes they own.
...and just how exactly is that going to be enforced?
Do you have a copy of the current Ft Hood reg that states soldiers can't own and maintain personal firearms while residing off post? I'd like to read it.

It's relatively easy to stop someone from carrying a weapon onto an airplane, but hundreds (if not thousands) of steel vehicles, that's another story.
One contributor on CNN was promising to find out "how weapons got on that base" and FOX speculated that from rumors of alleged witnesses, it was a "high-powered weapon". All the networks are scrambling to find their graphic images of AR-15s just in case they get lucky...
Y’know, I bet when this all washes out that it’s a domestic dispute over his girlfriend or wife and another soldier.
Something tells me if he was a real committed jihadi he’d have used a different weapon to bring about greater deaths...

What happened Obama, you lily-livered piece of schit, is that you won’t let our soldiers carry weapons to defend themselves because you don’t trust them. Our military bases are now just another set of gun-free zones that provide crazies a safe environment for them to wreck mayhem in.

What about their kids, their wives?
It almost seems illegal, telling a soldier that he cannot have a weapon in his privately owned home!
