ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts.

A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products — carries elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health disorders...

We're not smart enough to follow the complex, nuanced, sophisticated arguments of an liberal intellectual.

Neither are they. But we know it, and they don't. Therefore, when they go over the cliff, we don't follow them to Wile E. Coyote land.

By the way. have you ever noticed that the truth is simple. It's lies that get complex.

I think every year in school, from 1st grade on, Students should be required to study, and write a 10 page essay on, the story of Alexander the Great and the Gordian knot. There's a message in there.

Also, being skinny is more dangerous to your health than being overweight.

Diet drinks are MORE dangerous than drinks made with sugar.

Vegetarians tend to be liberal...and they’re less healthy..

Liberals are idiots...

Vegetarians also tend to be more gullible.

Never thought of that one - but it sure has that 'ring of truth' to it... Thanks for sharing.

Grains are a different story though.

Probably a nosy question on my part, but have you ever heard of a fermented milk product called keifer? It replenishes the natural gut bacteria our bodies need to fully digest our food.

The only reason I ask is that your statement about falling off the wagon & feeling like crap after eating carbs sounds a lot like my situation, but since I've been drinking keifer, the sensitivity to wheat and other grains have pretty much disappeared.

Dang! Seems omnivores seem to be more judgmental.

Personally, I don't give a crap(no pun intended) what someone else eats. With the exception of my ladyfriend but that's another story....anyway, to each his own.

All I know is, 2 days without meat and I gotta have a steak or porkchop or something. I'm a proud meateater and I'm in great shape. For 52.

Or it could be all the wine and beer. Don't know.

Most vegetarians I see on blogs are vegetarians on moral grounds not health. They have left an omnivorous diet but didn’t learn to balance their vegetarians diet. Any diet will screw you up if your unbalanced.

The body needs all of the food categories in moderation.

No, it really doesn't. Grains should be eliminated -- we're not evolved to digest grasses and seeds. And the sugar content of fruit makes it a poor choice, too.

A meat and dairy diet [for those who digest dairy products without side-effects] with a few low-carb vegetables would probably be the healthiest. I realize that's still considered nutritional heresy, but more and more people are realizing the benefits of such a diet.

Saturated fat and B12 are essential for human life. B12 can be obtained in nature ONLY by eating an animal product. Plants contain no B12. B12 is produced in nature only by cobalt-fixing bacteria, some of which have a symbiotic relationship with ruminants and other animals and thereby inject B12 into the food chain.

Meat-eating adults store B12 in their livers and that liver supply can compensate for several years of a vegan diet before giving out. Children, on the other hand, have no such supply and encouraging or acquiescing to a vegan diet for a child is tantamount to child abuse, little different than starving the child of calories.

I don’t do kefir but we are huge probiotic fans. We eat whole milk, plain Greek yogurt and add probiotic capsules as well.

I remember basketball great Bill Walton who became a vegetarian in college and was always bragging about how healthy he felt. Then as a pro he was constantly beset by injuries...bad knee, broken bones, and eventually a very bad back when he grew older that made him consider suicide the pain was so awful.

They say correlation is not causation, but one doctor looked at x-rays of Walton's broken bones and said it sure looked like osteoporosis to him from lack of calcium. Supposedly, Walton took all the supplements, but maybe his body could only metabolize dairy products for calcium.
