ATLANTA (CBS ATLANTA) – Vegetarians may have a lower BMI and drink alcohol sparingly, but vegetarian diets are tied to generally poorer health, poorer quality of life and a higher need for health care than their meat-eating counterparts.

A new study from the Medical University of Graz in Austria finds that vegetarians are more physically active, drink less alcohol and smoke less tobacco than those who consume meat in their diets. Vegetarians also have a higher socioeconomic status and a lower body mass index. But the vegetarian diet — characterized by a low consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol that includes increased intake of fruits, vegetables and whole-grain products — carries elevated risks of cancer, allergies and mental health disorders...

A great aunt of mine used to say: “Moderation in all things. Including moderation”. She was one week shy of her 105th birthday when she passed away.

We had a family friend who was obsessed with vegetarianism since his teens in the rebellious 60s that for decades to come he would throw a damper on everyone else’s good time over the holiday roasts. His health notched steadily downward, his weight steadily upward, and he died suddenly at 61 after a life of rarely relieved misery; but no one could convince him to stop eating a dismal diet of soy-based kibble, faux meat and canned vegetables, supplemented with pastries and beer. So if you’re going to do it, folks, go to the trouble of buying and preparing fresh vegetables, and learn how to combine them so you get complete proteins every day.

I think they have the cause/effect thing confused when discussing mental disorders here

You are correct. It's the Birkenstocks, bralessness and wild frizzy hair that causes the vegetarianism...

Wouldn’t it be easier to just say “omnivorous diets”?

Humans are meant to be omnivores, but you knew that.

Even Joel Fuhrman of "Eat to Live" fame knows that his diet/regimen can get boring. That's why he includes a few small portions of fish in his weekly plan.

Following his plan, I was taken off my diabetes medication after only 3 months, and I feel great (although I've put a few pounds on due to less exercise lately).

went full vegetarian... after a couple of years she resembled something found in Dachau and her hair started falling out.

The soy-based crap many of the veg fanatics eat is disastrous for the thyroid. One symptom of thyroid illness is hair falling out. Just saying'.

BMI is a fraud, a meaningless formula devised by the diet and exercise industries to create more obesity. Hallmark invented Valentines Day to sell more cards and Jenny Craig (among others) invented BMI to sell more diet shakes and treadmills.

Obesity can be measured in the following ways (among others):

Do you huff and puff climbing a set of stairs? If so, you are probably obese.

Can you look down from a standing position and see your feet? If not, and you see your protruding stomach instead you are probably obese.

If you are obtaining your boarding pass and the airline asks you to purchase an additional seat, you are probably obese.

If you are no longer invited to your neighbor's barbeques because last year you sat in a lawn chair and broke it, you are probably obese.

Anyway, I think I made my point. We don't need a stinking BMI measurement to tell us if we are obese or not. If you are active, hardly get sick, bounce out of bed in the morning raring to go and your energy levels are consistently high, you are healthy and just keep doing whatever it is you are doing - no matter what the scales tell you or some stupid measurement involving plugging your weight and height into some obscure algebraic formula.

grains (even “healthy whole grains”) are pretty much empty calories.

Some are good for scrubbing out your inner tubing. Other than that, too much can be quite destructive, particularly since the food industry has been tinkering with grains to make them even more concentrated. I eat steel-cut oatmeal a couple of times a week, maybe some whole rice a couple of times a month, and try to avoid other grain foods wherever possible.

The following is a list of vegetarians who were also killers: ...

Maniacal hunger for blood. Shoulda had a cheeseburger.

>>Vegetarians violate Darwinian law. Most are not only fools but agnostic nihilists. The power and influence they have achieved has harmed the world. Their passing is unlamented and predictable.

>>It seems to me that most vegetarians also produce a lot of “smug”.

My parents were pressured by smug vegan friends to raise me as a vegan. Thankfully, Mom and Dad were omnivores and raised me as one too. Their vegan friends died early. Mom and Dad lived into their mid 90s. God willing, I’m on track to do the same.

I understand. I fit your profile back in the day. I’ve often wondered if there is an agenda for underfed and scrawny being defined as the ideal. If so, it is a very old one. I remember fedgov mouthpieces and politicians pushing this since the 1970s in one form or another.

With this economy, I find myself cooking pasta way too often.

Beans! Beans and old school, non instant oatmeal. They’ll fill you up, stretch a dollar and leave you feeling good and energetic. Farting, but farting with primal energy and joy of life!

Yeah, I’ve seen it dozens of times in my life. Some modestly attractive, usually shy girl gets emo about eating the poor animals and goes vegetarian. It lasts a couple of weeks or she looses weight, skin tone, posture, hair quality, hair, energy, alertness and whatever looks she had. Get her back to a reasonable diet and it all springs back.

I’ve never seen a male do it. I think they cheat.

We do a lot of beans too. I put black beans in stuffed peppers and meat loaf. We did chicken quesadillas last night and I reduced the amount of chicken and increased the black beans. Breakfast is usually overnight oats from 100daysofrealfood.com (yes it’s a blog and no I’m not affiliated with it).

You know the drill then. I hear you about the pasta though. After a point it just makes one miserable.
