greatly restrained the authority of Department of Natural Resources police officers to venture onto private property.

"Private property"? Is that what they call The King's Land in Illinois?

Gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar then wants to change the rules to make it okay?

Who does he think he is?

The IRS?

Leftist politicians get upset when someone works within the system to change a law. The nerve of anyone who would do that.

“...Vandermyde was ticketed by an Illinois conservation cop for
having a loaded crossbow while riding on an all-terrain vehicle
during a deer-hunting excursion...

...State Wildlife Code says that hunters who use crossbows have to
have them in cases whenever they’re driving vehicles, even an ATV...

...House Bill 4377, removes the provision in state law that
hunters must case their crossbows when they’re operating a vehicle.
The measure passed the House last week 84-28 and now is in the Senate...”

He has an excellent point about law enforcement officials accessing private property without permission or a warrant.

And, while I don’t think a law forbidding it is necessary, it does not strike me as a particularly good idea to ride an ATV with a loaded crossbow... ...at least not the way I ride ATVs. ;-)

All of these unload and keep secure laws are just plain stupid. If I want to ride on a 4 wheeler with a loaded rifle that is my business.

We need a systematic review of existing laws, with an automatic repeal of any law that is not re-authorized within five years. There are far too many laws, and most of them are stupid. Riding an ATV with a loaded crossbow may be risky, but the law has no business getting involved.

It is perfectly legitimate to try to change or repeal a law that you believe is wrong.

It is without a doubt a stupid law. So what is the issue with trying to get rid of it?

Game wardens can go just about anywhere without a warrant.

We had one almost get shot at the gun range (by accident) because he was hunting on the range property without permission. He was down range on a live fire range, past the posted signs.

He threatened to shut us down, till the sheriff showed up and threatened to arrest him.

If you haven’t broken the law, you have no standing to challenge it. (Kinda sucks, though, that one has to submit to the criminal justice system to gain eligibility to challenge a bad law.)

Rosa Parks is in the same boat, she broke a law and then lobbied to change it.

Going on to private land in Texas is definitely not a healthy idea -- no matter what State agency you work for.

Just ask the Texas Railroad Commission dork who bypassed my locked gate on my posted, private property by driving across my front lawn on his way to inspect my oil well.

I was standing on my front porch checking on why our dog had alerted, when he drove across our lawn without stopping to check with me. I would have unlocked the gate for him if he had asked...

Instead, he found his egress blocked by a very angry -- and heavily armed -- landowner, who proceeded to read him the riot act, and who protested his trespass (by name) directly to the Railroad Commissioner.

I expect that Texas game wardens are smarter than that. At least, they know the trespass laws...
