Why not? Once disarmed, the people can be herded and slaughtered at will. It's not like communist/fascist/totalitarian governments didn't slaughter 200,000,000 people in the region during the last 100 years.

police officers armed with automatic rifles surrounded the group’s headquarters

What could go wrong? Just give up your weapons and the nice officers will be on their way ...

Kerry agreed with Putin to disarm Ukranians.

It is not a good idea at all. I visited Babi Yar outside Kiev, site of tens of thousands of genocidal executions. The place has that erie feel of evil violence. The enemies of freedom in Ukraine would / could repeat the history.

It is a really grim place. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babi_Yar

We’re likely to see continued instability in Ukraine, especially after IMF austerity policies hit.

They are disarming “neo-nazi” paramilitary groups, which were instrumental in taking down previous government but overall are nothing good and could be easily use as an excuse for Russian military intervention, “to avoid instability in the region”. General European tree hugging approach to gun ownership is a bit different issue.

The very government brought in by armed revolution now wants to ban arms. Guess they know how effective an armed populace is. Cowards. Lead the country properly and there is no fear of armed revolution.
