The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday declined to take up preliminary appeals brought by Roman Catholic groups that want an exemption from part of President Barack Obama's healthcare law requiring employers to provide insurance that covers contraception.
The cases were brought by a series of Roman Catholic-affiliated nonprofit groups based in Washington, D.C., including Catholic University.
The legal issue is different from one involving for-profit companies that also object on religious grounds to the so-called contraception mandate, which was argued before the high court last week.
The Supreme Court's decision not to hear the two cases at this stage means that the federal appeals court in Washington will proceed to decide the issue. If the groups lose, they would have another chance to seek Supreme Court review.

The Supreme Court cannot duck this issue forever. If Obama loses the Hobby Lobby case, the Court hopes the appelate court takes the hint and rules in favor of the Catholics. The Liberals on the Supreme Court want to avoid being open anti Catholic bigots.
Does this indicate the decision of other cases already heard by the court will settle these cases too?
It’s merely procedural. Means nothing on the merits.
And how many members of the SCOTUS are practicing Catholics and answerable to the pope?
If the other cases present the same legal questions to the Court, then yes. If not, then no. (I’ll have to check into that.)
None. Popular delusion and comforting fantasy to the bigots everywhere.
So Catholics don’t get their day in court?
Generally speaking, a denial of certiorari doesn’t indicate anything about the merits of a case.
i’m a legal amateur but this seems like it could be a good thing; if Catholic groups win in lower court game over...if they lose they can appeal to have it heard in the Supreme Court...am i reading this incorrectly??
They don’t jump ahead in the process. The appeals court will rule first, then they can appeal that ruling. If need be.
The best that can be hoped for is a 6-3 vote, since the 3 liberal women are hopeless. Breyer generally votes with the other liberals but maybe it isn't a sure thing this time. The question is how Kennedy and Roberts will vote. Is Roberts being blackmailed?
Actually, 6 appear to be Catholic. (Scalia, Kennedy, Thomas, Roberts, Alito, Sotomayor).
Whether they practice or consider themselves answerable to the Pope is another issue. I’m guessing at least one isn’t too beholding to the Pope on Abortion issues....
The point is if non Catholic Hobby Lobby wins its case, the Appellate division should find for the Catholic plaintiffs. Thereby the Supreme court would avoid a very uncomfortable vote and the proper label of anti Catholic bigots to those who vote to force them to fund things that violate their deeply held religious convictions.
I thought the Latino had family that wore the cloth. Maybe I remember wrong.
Catholics are answerable to Jesus, not the Pope.
good one.
Could that SCOTUS declined review be considered good news? Does it signal that SCOTUS will be sending guidance to the appeals court with its ruling with Hobby Lobby?
